View Full Version : Track day shenanigans

Hi all,

Nothing really to do with touring or my usual GS riding posts, but here goes....

Yesterday I dragged out my trusty ZXR400 and went to our local club practice day. I usually race in the F3 and Formula RR class, but this year I have been slack due to wedding and work and so on. So I trundled out there expecting to go fairly poorly due to lack of practice, but actually went pretty well, and worked on getting consintent fast laps, race simulations, and getting back on the pace after being baulked or going around a lapped rider. As it happened the day went very, very well. I managed to set personal best times and never once got passed which was a big bonus. I even managed to pass my two main competitors in the class - awesome! :D :D I had a few brake issues with brake fade after 6 laps and no brakes after 15 minutes, but that happened late in the day and I think I'll solve that with some HH compund pads, I just have a street compound in there now. Anyhow not too much more to say, here's some happy snaps, the dude with the camera was only on one corner (one of the hairpins), so all the shots are in that area........

Just found some more snaps, of a cheeky overtaking sequence with the old "come in tight, brake like hell, stop on the line and make the other dude run wide to avoid hitting you" routine, complete with courtesy / apology wave......! :)

Well done! I love the courtesy wave. Great photos...looks like lots of fun.

How does the Kawasaki go compare to the Honda? Much between them?

Not much between them at all. I am the only 400 rider in North Queensland who does not have a Honda, so there are Honda's at the front and back and middle of the field. Biggest difference is the riders...

.....one thing I have noticed about the Kawasaki consistently against the Hondas when having a real battle, is that the Kawasaki seems to brake and turn better than the VFR's. I can just slam the Kawasaki over onto it's side and it will hold its line, whereas the Hondas always seem to understeer a little, but this could be the riders..... the biggest difference is the way the Hondas exit a corner. With the V4 they seem to be able to crack the throttle wide open at lean angles and the thing just grips and shoots off, while the Kawasaki will spin if on the throttle too early, or it will just bog down if really low on the tacho. This issue is usually not noticed as the higer corner speed of the Kwaka / higher rpm = better exit speed, but if you baulk each other coming into a corner or get stopped at a lap rider, the Honda just runs away under acceleration on the lower part of the rev range. But like I said there is not much difference at all - it's all in the riders on the tight tracks we have up here.

Falls in the category of it being easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
