Yup folks, you're still in the right thread :chug:
This is the 3.part and final of the Euro-Alps yarn.

What's ahead?
Oh...boooyyy!! :glu :slobb:slobb:kna
The Dolomites....Southern Austria, a dream called Slovenia, then more Switzerland...the Grossglockner...
More stumping pics, snow, snow and endless twisties, day after day after day.

We'll start with Day21 on the road, crossing from Glurns, the old medieval city... into the Dolomites, THE MECCA of motorcycle-riding.

To re-cap the last day (of part2) before continuing here:
http://www.austouring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1506&page=30

I WANNA READ IT ALL AGAIN...FROM THE START!!!:

Enjoy... :so:so

:hi:hi to all

I've done a couple of minor changes which hopefully make reading this thread a little easier.
While pages are loading quick enough here, I've found up to 168 pics on one page (of 10 posts),
I've reset that to 5posts per page to cut down the number of pics that have to be downloaded (in order to be displayed).
This should speed up the loading of pages somewhat.

You will also find, that the page-counter at the top-right of the thread will now display up to 10 "previous pages"....instead the 5 it was set to previously.....which should make navigating within the thread quicker and easier.

Hope it helps :so

It’s another one of those moments…..look at the faces and you know that some bond has grown over the short 2 days we’ve been with Helga.

Some “Farewells” don’t come easy… :cdle

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2101.jpg

Traffic is fairly heavy, there are more little tractors with the proceeds of the grape-harvest clogging the main road to Merano, down-valley.

The small city is just as choked, roadworks everywhere…as the clouds are breaking up within 10 mins and things are getting warm!

There ya go…the Italian Postie!:doh::so

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2102.jpg

Finding the road up towards Meran2000 and Hafling is a bit of a roundabout affair, but we get there…traffic thins…another group of bikes is quickly overtaken, after that it’s sheer single-laner bliss:so:so….a tiny band of asphalt snaking along the hillside high above the valley, magnificent views…time to breath DEEPLY.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2103.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2105.jpg

Into Bolzano (Bozen) for a few wrong turns and a subsequent, but short city-tour…. then straight north again, up the Sarner Valley towards the Penser Saddle.
Not 20k’s later is the turnoff to the Ritten Mountain….and other areas beyond.
Glad to get through Bolzano relatively easy, it’s time for a break at the “Sausage-Hut”, one of those tiny Kiosk-Style "Snack-Bars” common for this area.
It’s “Banger on a bun”….Banger on a bun with Sauerkraut…with mustard and Sauerkraut…with this…with that….you get the idea.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2104.jpg

Again we’re high above the valleys, more narrow single-laners, more lush green meadows…and high above, in the distance, the first sight of the Dolomites.:glu

OHHH YEAHHHH……the DOLOS, as what they call them here.

The place of mysteries and dreams for anyone on the globe who loves riding a bike. The place where 20 or more passes run into eachother, overlap and undercut.
The place of endless AHHHs and OHHHHs, whatever m’cycle forum in the world one gleans into….in ONE WORD : Motorcycle-MECCA !!!!

The Europeans swoon over it, well-travelled Yanks are going bananas about ‘em…the Dolos get universal approval of being the BEST there is….and LOTS and LOTS of it.
The towns are real…no seasonal resorts, but proper settlements, that have been there for hundreds of years…and longer.

In winter it’s a GIGA-skicircus with over 300lifts and 1000s of km of groomed downhill-slopes of every kind and difficulty.

Still from a distance…

We’re right on time for the meet up with Rudi and Petra from the Alpenbiker forum, Brixen is a small town and we find some shade under some gnarly, old chestnut trees. :kna:kna

I’m really looking forward to the meet, after more than a year of getting along really well through the forums it’s finally time to meet face to face.
I wonder how things will turn out…

No big Hello’s…
”Let’s get out of here, up the Wurzjoch and have a break at the Edelweiss-Hut, have a cuppa and sniff each other out, eh?”.
I knew it….my kind of guys!:so

Yep…getting along like a house on fire….let’s get down to St. Martin and south to our stay in Arabba, just across the shallow Passo di Compolongo.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2129.jpg

The bikes are in good company…this is a Biker’s stay, the Hotel Olympia can house 150 riders at once….easily!

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2130.jpg

Rudi and Petra can only stay one night, but will ride with us for half a day tomorrow, before returning home.
Things get late…there’s soooo much to talk about…

That shot going from the road all cast in shadow and showing detailed cracks running through the road line and moving all the way up to the bright well lit mountain is just stupifying ! It looks like a painting to me, I just can't comprehend standing infront of that in person.

I also love the mirror shot with the sun giving a startburst effect. Whoever took that shot is an evil genious :D

There are twisties…and there are TWISTIES!!

The Dolos got them ALL…the smooth, wide, gentle stuff, medium-speed scratchers….the barely asphalted single-lane goat-tracks…other passes are in-betweens…take 2 dozen of the above, shake well… and drop them, willynilly, on the map.
Those that don’t tie in immediately, string the ends together by what would be considered, in Australia, an EXCEPTIONAL bike-road by itself!!!

Then add breathtaking scenery, glaciers and whitecaps galore…chuck in literally hundreds of superb, little eating places, bakeries and cafes….100s of accommodation places of every type one could possibly dream of…get the idea??:glu:glu:glu

Then top it all off with Rudi, who knows the place like his back-pocket…
Welcome to the Dolos !!!!!!!!

No use wasting a second of a day then…:wow:

As described, it is a little hard to find, the village consisting of a maze of cobble-stoned lanes but eventually we make it out the other end on a tiny single-laner…

Due to the (certainly deserved) reputation of the Dolos, there are a lot more bikes on the roads than what we’d previously seen in France and Switzerland …perhaps it’s the current weather, who knows…
From small groups of 3 or 4 to whole clusters of 20 and more, there are bikes everywhere.
Several times a day one or more of us are faced with one or more oncoming bikes in our lane….drifting wiiide out of the hairpins, taking ridiculous entries, taking the “going for the gap” to new levels :wow::doh::doh:, sometimes crawling around bends holding up even Campervans and tourist-coaches, literally a poofteenth away from just plain falling over in the middle of the bend due to the lack of speed.…moments, that leave one with heart-in-mouth…:eek:
And this is the LATE low-season…during the summer-peak I don’t really want to be here, it’s gotta be mayhem…

A quick check in the mirrors afterwards usually shows nearly exclusively German plates…
It triggers a memory of all those little jibes and jokes in some of the Euro-bike-forums:
“The “Piefkes” can’t ride for shit”…”crashtest-dummies” etc…

“Piefkes” …the slightly derogative, provocative Austrian name for Germans…
Perhaps it’s just a good-natured rivalry between neighbours, but there certainly seems some solid “stock-in-the-broth”, there’s an extraordinarily large amount of riders who just can’t ride….and can't ride corners in particular.

For a possible reason why, let’s walk around a cluster of parked bikes at one of the lookouts…or the bike-garage at the Biker-Hotel Olympia…
“Look at that nicely restored CB750 over there!!” ….which then turns out to be stock and dead-original (bar the packrack and heated grips).
30+ years old, 24.000k’s on the clock….a 16y/o mint-looking TDM850 with 16.000km…parked next to it, a sparkling late 90’s Funduro650 with a paltry 8600km on the dial….and on, and on.
Keep checking, and there’s hardly a bike that’s seen more than 5000km/ year. Average around 2-3000km/ year.

No wonder then when they’re wobbling all over the road….and no surprise, when the Hotel offers a parking area for busted bikes.:bs:bs

Up the Fedaia Pass… and we’re in for a stumper.

“Temps 2 to 16 with a big front coming in from the Northwest, bringing showers and snowfalls to 1200m. Patchy weather with showers across the coming weekend…”
Argghhhh...

Over the last few days we’ve been watching our tyres disappear before our eyes…we’ll never make it on those for the rest of the trip, Tim’s front on the 1150RT looks terminal right now…

We need some quick decisions!
A call for help goes out to Herfried in Troepolach, about 250km further east.
We haven’t been entirely successful with our continued moves eastward to avoid the weather-fronts, but are hoping to get away lightly…..as before.
:so
Herfried calls back: “ Yup, my tyre-guy in Hermagor will have 3 sets of hoops for the GS12s and the Pirellis for the RT by tomorrow….see you soon then! The tyre-swap is stitched for Friday afternoon…
Ahhh…can you fix the seat of my GS12 when you get here?”

Sure!

Let’s pack up then …

Strange though, to have stayed in one and the same country for 2 days in a row…:bs:bs:bs

Sure enough…the morning’s wet, but still not too cold for fresh snow to have blocked our exit…
Across the Passo Falzarego again, this time with a lot more care, into Cortina d’Ampezzo and up the Passo Tre Croci

I’d really looked forward to those little backroads, the “Panoramica” and Mt. Paularo (both dirt,) in particular. The way the weather is though, it’d be all risk for no gain.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2404.jpg

We keep going east to Moggio, then cut north into the Aupa Valley.
The first 5km turn out to be one continuous roadwork-section, after that the road narrows drastically, climbing up the Sella di Cereschiatis. NOICE !!:clap:
This feels better…the drop into Pontebba is just as tight and scenic as the climb.

With most of the distance for the day under our belts and only the Nassfeld Pass across into Austria to go, it’s time for a break, the slowly lifting clouds might even break open a little. Central Plaza/ Pontebba...things aren't exactly rockin around here :bs

The Nassfeld Pass is the one, Goodie and I have vivid memories of…. there’s a tunnel on this, the Italian side, which is all cobblestones, rough-hewn walls, pitch-dark, water continuously dripping from the ceilings and walls….and it’s a HAIRPIN.There’s the sign at the side of the plaza, let’s go….

Hey…over there!!! See the FAAAAT guy on the Vespa?
OMG…looks like he’s got a skateboard wedged up his crack…
That poor, little scooter…

Not far and the first “CLOSED” sign appears….road works !
SHITE!!
It’s 60-70k’s of detour via “boring” main roads…:(
But since the barrier is next to the road and not blocking the road…let’s give it a whirl!

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2413.jpg

Piles of materials and the odd digger/ Bobcat grace the sides of the narrow band of asphalt…a construction worker stops us at the tunnel entrance…they’ve ripped up a 20m section of cobblestones, the sand is loose and deep, there’s also a backhoe inside the tunnel….
He waves us through after a minute…not wanting to spray the backhoe-operator by roostertailing through the narrow gap, it’s sloooow…and therefore wobbly. The bikes wanna go everywhere but straight…this is the wrong thing for a fully-packed touring-bike.
A few near misses, Tim nearly decking the RT in the pile of super-deep stuff before climbing onto the remaining cobbles…and we make it all through.

The rest is a piece of cake…while the clouds are closing in again, slowly dropping their bellies.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2412.jpg

Still good enough for a bit of fun, though…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2414.jpg

There’s some slaloming around the fresh cow-pies on the main road while walking to the pub for dinner…

Once more, we've found a place that's “home” instantly!:woot::woot::so

This is about as far east as we'll go...(only the "Slovenia-loop" will get us a little further "out", but not overnight).
From here we'll loop towards the north-west, through Austria into Southern Germany and on from there, depending on weather and conditions.

Apart from being a Biker-Gasthof for a decade or longer, Winkler’s is also a small but well-functioning farm…all sorts of animals around, paddocks out the back…and we’re the only guests at the moment.

Which is most probably, why the donkey reckons it’s time to get up while “fog-horning” through the neighbourhood…Christ, that beast has got some lungs and stamina !:rolleyes:

….cowbells tinkle in the background when the donkey goes for air…

LOOK!!! One of those Shit-Flickers !!!! :doh::doh:

After cleaning the stables for a year and throwing everything onto one heap, it all gets loaded onto this thing, then spread onto the fields and paddocks before the blanket of snow covers it for the winter…soaking the natural fertilizer into the ground during the snow-melt.
And yo…the VERY FRUITY aroma hits like a dunny-door! :wow::wow:
After a few days, one tends to get used to it though…it becomes part of the whole experience.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2504a.jpg

It also makes for interesting moments when coming around a bend and that’s where the tractor’s done a U-turn, dribbling the stuff all over the road…
Worst part is, that then there’s no way to take the foot off the peg or hand off the bars to warn the others…it can get somewhat busy!:bs

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2505.jpg

Not much riding today…the weather is on/off and we’ve got to be back by lunch…the afternoon is reserved for changing 4 sets of tyres and fixing that GS12 seat of Herfried’s.

Let’s nip up north, towards the Nockalm Road, which we’ve got tickets for…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2506.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2507.jpg

It’s the day where I’m dropping the ball… have us riding in circles, missing turn-offs, backtracking…just one goof after another.
Still a nice little tootle through the neighbourhood…and still a few Black Spurs worth.

A “Tile-heater”…a slow-combustion stove with a small firebox heating the thick outer clay tiles. Sometimes they even come with a “baking-tube” a small compartment to slowly bake bread and other foods.
Construction is complex…therefore expensive…and the trade of “oven-builder” is slowly disappearing.

You guessed it…Polenta’s got to do with corn.
This is a kind of Thanksgiving-Party…thanksgiving for a good harvest of corn.
The stuff is usually grown as winter-fodder for dairy and cattle, but while the harvest is on, all sorts of stuff is made from it.
From corn-on-the-cob to any kind of boiled, grilled, smoked, steamed, mashed savoury-varieties to the sweet versions of pancakes and mixed with fruit…there seems to be nothing that can’t be made from it.
Then add all the other local specialties, cheeses, smoked sausages and speck… the fire-brigade and most of the local council on a day-out…and there’s your Polenta-Festival!!

The Vrsic-saddle in Slovenia and the Mangart Road really need good, clear weather…and there’s no quick extraction from it once the loop is started…
Let’s start out and see how it goes…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2701.jpg

The run towards Villach is quick, the roads are slowly drying out…with no traffic to speak off, the lowly Wurzen Pass into Slovenia is a race-track…not smooth, but wide and inviting….know, what I mean??:whistle:

We don't know it yet......
....but here is another of those CROWN-DAYS in the making…

…one of those unforgettable days, that will be talked about over and over…
This time the key-ingredient is ….AUTUMN !!
Somehow, this corner of the Alps has turned on the full scale of yellows, reds and rust, the slopes are one huge patchwork-carpet of colours…it’s MAGIC !!:so:so:so

Just a few hundred meters short of the Italian border is a small sign, pointing to the Mangart…a saddle that was hotly fought-over during WW1.
The road’s notorious for earth and rubble-slips in the lower stretch and keeps getting shoddily patched time and again…let’s see how far up we can get, it’s supposed to be absolutely spectacular!!!

Back on the Predil Pass…the road leads right through some old fortifications…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2760.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2761.jpg

Just past the border it’s a tack west across the Sella Nevea with its small ski resort…and on towards Chiusaforte, the autumn colours all around us, it’s a journey of wonderment.:so:so:so

As the afternoon turns golden, the valleys turn dark….still enough time for a break to chew through a little of what we’ve seen and felt…there’s sooo much of it!
The hop across the Nassfeld Pass back into Austria closes the day and it’s just short on dark as we pull in.
“Our” Gasthof is closed, the Gasthof opposite also have their day-off on Sundays…. but the bar is open and the lady of the house takes pity on us and somehow produces some Gulasch-Soup and a mountain of toasted cheese-and-speck sandwiches…even though we’re ravenous and grateful for anything, this is far above for what we’d hoped for…YUMMM.

A BIG thanks to the owner !! :so:so:so:chug:

VRSIC…MANGART….Northern Slovenia???

I wanna ride this once more in my life !!!
Once more in a golden autumn afternoon….once more with a bunch of mates….

Perfect for a coffee-sipping social-cruise…. or a wet-dream for scratching a sporty through it, if it wouldn’t be for the heavily enforced speedlimits.

We try to skirt the bustling town of Zell am See by using the other shore through Thumersbach, but traffic is just as heavy here…
Saalfelden has changed completely out of recognition…a small, traditional, rural town is now a bustling beehive of a seemingly typical Aussie-country-centre style…a kilometre of flat roofed factory-style showroom buildings leads into town….service roads, white vans like ants… Aldi, Maccas…it’s the pits, let’s get out of here.

The search for a bed for the night is on….we keep drifting north-west towards Lofer, close to the German border.
If Lofer is anything like Saalfelden….
Just before Lofer the road skirts around St. Martin, the town set well back from the main road…we'll have a look.

Ohhhh YEAH !!! This is cute, cuddly-cute…it’s tiny… a few shops, a church and a big, old Gasthof, narrow lanes….YES!!:so
My grandparents spent many a summer-holidays hiking around here…
We hit jackpot when walking through the 3” thick carved timber door to the reception of the Gasthof-zur-Post.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2841.jpg

The place is living history:wow::wow:. Days later, as we’re about to leave, we find out that the place has been built in the year 1600…

WOWWW….it’s been a full day, a long day for sure, but a day jam-packed with impressions…. views that open the heart…roads to tootle or scrape on…a very warm welcome from our hosts in a place that not just breathes ancient life but could easily be interchangeable with the word and meaning of ‘character’…

Overcast…some blue holes…dry roads.
The churchbells next door have made us stand straight in bed at 6am.
We’re getting used to it…but, shite…that belltower is barely 15m away and it’s like waking up inside that big bronze bell!!
The ears are still woolly on the way to breakfast…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2901.jpg

It’s off to Berchtesgaden/ Germany today, for a snoop around town and, if possible, a visit to the Kehlsteinhaus, a place with ominous history…Hitler’s Eagles Nest.
First the short hop across the border…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2902.jpg

Not far from Berchtesgaden

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2903.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2904.jpg

…and up the Rossfeld Road, a loop-road that skims along the ridge between Austria and this “pocket” of Germany…. the bowl that Berchtesgaden is located in.

The view into Austria

The other side…Berchtesgaden/ Germany

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2908.jpg

Back into Berchtesgaden, the turnoff to the Kehlsteinhaus-Tourist Circus is found easily…it’s a matter of parking the bikes and joining the queue for the bus ride to the top.

Sure, it’s a designated tourist attraction, but one of the things that are part of a trip like ours…apart from that, it’s a breathtaking bus ride and the scenery around the Eagles Nest is breathtaking.

Rather than taking the Nazi-built elevator from the top-carpark, we decide to hike the last 100m elevation, for the sake of getting a “feel” for the area, and…of course…for the views.

Tornantis….even here

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor2912.jpg

And an even bigger WHOWWW for the absolute crazy amount this thing cost to built. IT’S MINDBOGGELING!!!!:wow::wow::wow:

The whole thing was built within a year…the 7km access road gobbled up a staggering 120million Euro (today’s money…around A$200mil).
It was an engineering feat of the first order; many lost their life along the way, too….the road is still used by the tourist buses today.

Building the road, access tunnels, the 100m elevator, carparks, all the needed construction accessories like material-lifts, access roads etc etc. took a STAGGERING ¾ BILLION Aussie-$ in today’s money !!!!!!!

The exit from there back to the main road proves a short, but magnificent little single-laner….snaking it’s way through lush paddocks and across gentle hills, the brandnew, clean and super-smooth band-of-black is a gem. No markings, no posts….only the big green with a continuous black wiggle through it.:wow::so:so

To me, the Kehlsteinhaus/ Eagles Nest was the most impacting part of the day…somehow a weird and creepy place.

You've certainly got a point there... it's been a bit of a struggle to find our "wheels" since we've been back...just don't feel like going out there for a ride.
I certainly shouldn't moan about the available bike-roads around here, living at Melb's eastern edge, the "twisties" start pretty much at the front door.
(Well, relatively speaking...not compared to what it was in the Alps).

Somehow the buzz is missing, the mountains, vistas...different cultures, signs, languages, money, foods, road-markings....
I'm sure it'll come back after a while, but for the time being I don't really want to climb on the bike for a ride... Goodie and Tim are the same.
Tim, who's been riding every day for years .... commuting, weekends etc. ....has only been on the bike 3 or 4 times, for short "shopping-style" trips only.

Crunch time !!!
After nearly a full month on the road, the prospect of only 9 more days is frightening….:eek:
9 lousy days….we’ll have to make the BEST out of it.
As the weather’s overcast we’ll slot in a day of “commuting”…sort of….what one could call commuting here….

Somehow, our hosts have locked us into their hearts…lots of good wishes…”You’ll come back one day, will you?”…the old owner-couple stands outside, flanked by the receptionist-daughter, the nephew-waiter and the son-in-law chef, whose white uniform is the last thing to disappear in the mirrors… I’d like nothing more to turn back rightaway and stay with them for another few days….

St. Johann…Woergl…the traffic gets heavy…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3001.jpg

…we bail out and run along some tiny backroads parallel to the main…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3002.jpg

Shooting ahead, I turnoff, not checking if one of the others corner-marks…at the next crossroads I’m alone…backtracking, there’s nobody to be found….shit!:rolleyes: I slowly trace back the same road, then try to imagine where they could’ve gone.
Knowing Tim well…he’d tack over there…now the chase is on!
Little country lanes, tractors pulling shitflickers, another little town….5 mins later yet another one…I keep going like a bat out of hell.
Knowing that they’re doing exactly the same, trying to catch up with me, assuming I’m ahead….
In the end I stop and get the phone out…

Now, everyone who knows me from one of the rides, knows that I’m a total fossil when it comes to those things…I hate them with a passion, despise the idea of being "on standby" ANYWHERE, ANYTIME….and wouldn’t know which friggin button to press to save my arse…menus mean nothing to me.

I’d rather rebuilt a Norton or respoke a wheel from scratch, even built a computer and load it up, wire up a house with 3-phase power….all at the side of the road and at the drop of a hat….but making a call from a mobile?? Christ !!:wow::wow::bs

Somehow it works, the sausage-fingers have played the right buttons, YEEHHA…the bunch is only a few k’s ahead at a servo.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3003.jpg

We decide to make tracks and the prospect of running through Innsbruck at close to lunchtime makes us buying a 10-day Austrian “Pickerl” (Autobahn-Pass).

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3004.jpg

The “Bahn” bypasses Innsbruck…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3005.jpg

…shortly after we exit in Zirl to cut across the Kuhtai-Saddle, a shallow, easy pass into the bottom end of the Otz Valley.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3006.jpg

A quick coffee-break, rather make that hot soup, and it’s back into the Inn valley for the turnoff across the Piller Heights, another quick, easy Pass….as things get colder, we pop out onto the lead-up of the Reschen Pass across into Italy.
Again, the Kauner Valley is choked with clouds…no use going up there, the grand vistas are hiding in the clouds…:(

Roadworks up the Reschen…it’s closed…the detour leads up the Finstermunz Pass that joins the Reschen just short of the top.
All the traffic that usually runs up the wider, more open Reschen Pass is now clogging the tight, steep and narrow Finstermunz…overtaking is heart-in-mouth… gaps don’t exist, they have to be “created”.

Wind-Power across the Reschen Pass

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3007.jpg

The famous church-tower of the flooded-for-progress town of Reschen, something the Greenies and historians are still foaming about…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3008.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3009.jpg

Only a few k’s short of Glurns (yep, the medieval town where we were last week or so) , we get off the Reschen and cut through the historical town of Laatsch….one lane of the road leads through a “tunnel” underneath the church !!!!:wow::wow:

The turn-off to Livigno, another one of those duty-free zones, this one between Italy and Switzerland…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3017.jpg

We’ll keep going to Zernez though…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3018.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/3/tor3019.jpg

Made the target !! …and it’s been a good day, the golden autumn afternoon across the Ofen Pass mellows the moods…

“What?? 95 a night?? That’s pretty SCHTIFF, innit?”
“Hang on!! That’s Swiss Francs (equivalent to A$) and includes half-board, mate…sleep, brecky and dinner!!”
“Still…but there’s not much else around, isn’t there?”

“Naw…bugger it, let’s stay the night and see how things go tomorrow…”
Later, one of the Sky-channels pronounces clear skies and temps in the mid-teens for the next couple of days!!
The maps come out…topboxes get re-packed for day-loops…7.30 for brecky, check!!

A FULL MONTH on the road…and only a lousy 8 days left.

The longer I sit here putting this thing together, the more overwhelmingly clear the sheer size and volume of this trip becomes.
While on the road, there were times when frustration set in, not being able (due to weather/ time/other reasons) to follow our “itinerary”….bagging another day in a “special” area, missing out on many passes and loops, all of them seemingly more worthwhile than what we were doing at the time…

Looking at it now though…it’s been a chockablock, wall-to-wall discovery with far too little time to even halfway digest all of what we did.

For those who reckon that the Alps region can’t be THAT big to hold room for much more…get your butt over there and find out.
There’s more than enough for another half-dozen trips of the SAME kind and duration. To spent 6 weeks in the French Mediterranean and Hautes Alpes ALONE means missing at least half of it…
Then loop through the “foothills”…and spent another 6 months…

The distances we’re used to in AUS just don’t apply to the Alps, 100km of Snowies in AUS are equivalent to 20km over there (or even less)…everything is so concentrated.

While it’s an absolute buzz to write up the story, sorting through and prepping the pics for uploading…it also takes an enormous amount of time.
Folks…I need another break…a week or so to do some other stuff, talk with the family again and get set up for the pre-Xmas rush at work.

We’re also around the 2000pic mark by now and it’s turned into the biggest “Ride-Report” I’ve ever seen on the Net…not, that it was intentional from the outset…it just happened that way.
Some of the pics aren’t 1.grade, they’re cut-outs from the original pic…or they weren’t all that good from the start…I used them nevertheless, as they fitted the flow of the story, stringing together bits to make sense and create continuity.
Some of the pics are absolute stumpers though….others lost a lot once they were shrunk to fit the format here.
Having THAT many pics also takes away from many individual shots, each superb on their own but loosing spark when mixed up with the rest…
Whatever, hope you enjoy it!!!

8 days left…let’s make the BEST of it !!!

What’s in store then?

…Scratch till ya drop…the loop from Zernez/ Engadin Valley/ St. Moritz
…Splugen Passmania
…A SPARKLER above Pontresina/ Bernina/ Switzerland
…Disney Castles and Applestrudel
…Alpenbiker Meet in Fussen/ Germany
…Crazy King Ludwig and Magic on the Furkajoch
…Andermatt lunacy
…Hooning the Susten
…Cannobio-Magic (or: how tight d’you wanna have it?)
…The Grande Finale!!

Naw...after looking at soooo many, I don't know which one's what without checking back through endlessly more of 'em...and boy, there are some stumpers amongst them!!!
You've got a load of great pics, good angles and perspectives, foregrounds and straight-into-the-sun-shots.... so has Karel, who's stuff got better and better the longer we were on the road (shame about the res on some of them though, can't blow them up beyond A4 size or cut-out small sections to boost to a "usable" size).

Same with Tim's and Goodie's (res is good on those, though).

Many of the night/dark-shots didn't turn out...mine in particular.
But I copped some good macro-shots in return.

Lots of snapshots of details I didn't conciously see at the time...

Haven't looked at a single one of those videos yet, there should be some perlers in that lot...

Ps check the length of the long tunnel. I think it was 5km?? It was a weird sensation, like a bad dream. the faster you seemed to approach the end it still seemed the same distance away - weird shit!! I'm not sure if it was the majesty of the mountains, the enveloping, almost "screen saver" like mystic of the autumn blends or the sheer brutality of a paved road built with slave, wartime labour in c. 1914 but I was snared by this Tornanti moment. Maybe I could thank peristroika for being able to run SLO/AUS/ITA in 1 day, maybe it was just a matter of thanking Pete for nodding..."Yep..we'll do that one.." instead of taking the easy road..whatever it was this was a gem of a day permanently etched on the visor of my Shoei - one I'll not likely ever enjoy again but held forever in these memories. It was and is a stunning motorcycle dream road in autumn.

I totally agree with you on that one, Art! Those tunnels were definitely something to be experienced! And funnily enough, they're all different. There was that particular long tunnel, you mentioned, there were also a few wet ones, dark ones, cobble-stoned, freezing cold ones, lit-up or dark ones, narrow one-laners, hewn into the rocks, some with hairpins in them - and then there was the Nassfeld Tunnel! A personal favourite of mine! Would anyone have a guess at how many tunnels we conquered?

And maybe we should mention the "brave" road-side workers - or shall we call them suicidal? :looney: Quite often we'd come around a bend and there were some workers repairing something along the roads without being in a properly wardened off area. Don't know, who got the bigger fright, us or them?

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3109e.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3109f.jpg

After a cuppa and some, now traditional, cheese and speck in Thusis, it’s the Via Mala Gorge next, Rofla Gorge right after.
Navigating is a bit of a nightmare, the old road runs sort of parallel to the toll-freeway, for which we haven’t got tickets….and even though it’s only a short 25km, trying to find the old road is often challenging. Missing/ obscured signage…on/off ramps, turn-offs into local roads…they’ve certainly made it deliberately hard, so folks throw the towel, buy a sticker and use the freeway.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3110.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3110a.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3110b.jpg

In one section, the gorge is so narrow, there’s no room for 2 roads…the “free” old road is diverted onto the freeway for a short stretch…via a tiny “free of tolls” sign tucked underneath the rest of the myriad of signs pointing everywhere. CRAZY!!
Ultimately we pop out of the dark gorges and back into blinding sunshine at the town of Splugen, start of the Splugen Pass running south.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3113a.jpg

The road’s got no rhythm whatsoever…it’s been built along the contours of the mountains, following every nook and cranny, hairpins galore for the start, then tight sweepers cut by hairpins, then open and wide for half a km…then a slope full of hairpins again...switchbacks/ cutbacks…leading blind lefthanders into sharp rights and viceversa….it’s riding at 120% !
No “straightlining” here, no tunnels or galleries that’ve “smoothed” out the way this thing snakes up the hill….challenging and plain
AWESOME riding!!!

Across the top things suddenly turn flat and straight…it’s just too weird.

Only a few k’s up the side of the Bergell Valley, Soglio has been a way-station for the old Romans, who’ve developed most of the pass-roads as trading roads a couple of 1000years back…they also planted all these chestnut trees to feed their stock, pulling the carts across the Alps…even today the “new” road leads through whole plantations and riding’s a bit of slalom around the piles of chestnuts and their skins at this time of year.:bs

The final 8 days and I can promise you now...if you've made it through the previous 30 days, you'll love the rest of it as well.

There's some stunningly-beautiful days in there... we DID make it to Andermatt in the end...we learned how to dodge those snow-poles that threaten to knock the mirrors off when cranked right over....there is another raid of the Meiringen Latterie...there's a howling sunset at the Furkajoch near Liechtenstein...there is, there is....

Again, the early morning is bitterly cold. This morning we’re going “squidding” only jeans, sneakers and light gear for the short ride up-valley near St. Moritz/ Pontresina, we’re off for a walk.
Discovery at a different pace….

We’re frozen black and blue after only 30k’s…when it’s time to get off the bikes for the funicular-ride up Muottas Muragl, one of the local ski-mountains around the area and one, that offers the most breathtaking views into the valleys and across into the white giants of the Bernina Mountains.

Another sparkling, cracking-cold morning…and we’re leaving the Engadin!!
:(:(
We’ve got half a day to cross through part of Austria into Southern Germany near Fussen for the meeting with a group from the Alpenbiker forum.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3301.jpg

The border-crossing is a hilarious affair this time around, a cute Blonde in uniform struts all her official weight with a John-Wayne swagger, playing high officialdom to the max…it’s a pisser.:bs:bs

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3302.jpg

This time the Kauner Valley is clear, but we haven’t got the time, there’s a pack of twisties on the running-sheet.
With our current stickers still valid, it’s a quick blurt up the Autobahn from Landeck to Imst, where the Hahntennjoch starts.
The interesting part is over quickly, just a few hairpins, then the road stretches out across the long saddle, leading through fields of scree and rubble.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3304.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3304a.jpg

More interesting stuff can be found on the way down into Bschlabs (say that with a mouth full of pizza):so

Next is a valley by the name of….”Name-less” !!

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3314.jpg

Weeelll…that’s more like it…this is good fun.:woot::woot: Good road, flowing bends and a few little “somethings”, that add spice to the ride.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3314a.jpg

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3315.jpg

The fun finishes at the Fern Pass, a shallow affair, main-road type of north-south-connector, which leads straight through a tunnel into Germany…and Fussen, our target.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3316.jpg

Rudi and Hartmut have chosen well, the location of the meet is signed well to Lake Weissensee, just out of town.

Time to nip home….
Rudi and Hartmut had organized a BnB just up the road from our meet, at Rossmoos, a tiny hamlet of only a few farms and other buildings.
Rudi had picked up the keys before the meet “as the owner’s off to a wedding this arvo, this way you’ve got access whenever you want”.

While unpacking the bikes, a car pulls up and it takes an agonizing 5mins. for an old guy to sort his legs and arms to lift himself out of the car.
Here’s our host !
The red face is glowing like an LED-powered tomato, the honker the telltale-sign that this isn’t first time he’s completely pickled.

His steps cover about 6” at a time…between breaks!!
Christ, Grandpa’s pissed to the gills!!
“How was the wedding?”
“What wedding?”
“THE WEDDING!!?”
“ Ahhhh, the wedding….don’t know, I only had a few little sips before the tucker showed up…”
“Sure, mate…SURE!!!”
We slowly inch him to the door, always on the hop in case he just keels over there and then…
Man…if he drops, he might burst and spill that 100proof home-brewed all over the drive….and with Karel fiddling with his busted headlight globe and open connectors, the whole shebang might blow to the shitter…

That done, it’s time to walk across the main road to the only Gasthof in town, The White Stag. Goodie had checked earlier and booked us in…

Grandpa’s up and shuffling around!! He even started to set the breakfast table…:wow:
Jeez, he must have a secret stash of helium under the bed…just to keep him upright after a bash like yesterdays…
We give him a hand to finish the job, clear the table afterwards, too…
Then it’s off…southward to Reutte and Breitenwang in Austria…

Naw, he certainly ain't a learner :bs
He just loves that vest I guess....

Apart from that, it helps a lot to roughly pinpoint where folks are, especially when crossing some town with lots of traffic/ lights etc., when the group gets separated....a quick look in the mirror...yellow missing...pull up before the next turnoff!

it really highlights just how unbike friendly australia really is..

I don't know...it's just, that bikes are GOOD business over there!!
And there are PLENTY of them, way more than over here.
It pays for all sorts of business, to display themselves as biker-friendly.

When asking for accom with the old couple in Glurns (Italy), they insisted (as is custom) that we'd look at the rooms first, before committing.

Goodie started to take the boots off when entering the hallway...carpets, personal stuff and all that around....
The host lady protested immediately: "
NO no no, leave the boots ON!!
Bikers are clean folks!!":eek::eek:
"Bushwalkers/Skiers have dirty gear, bikers are fine"

We came across that quite often over there...

See Andermatt there to the centre-right?
West across the Furka to Gletsch, keep going to Ulrichen, dogleg across the Nufenen Pass to Airolo... let’s try and find the Tremola road, the old cobble-stoned St. Gotthard Pass…. back towards Andermatt, turn left across the Furka again (bummer, aye??), then north up the Grimsel….see that tiny, white road turning left at the top? Yep…the time-controlled Lake Oberaar road…then down the Grimsel to Innertkirchen and possibly Meirigen for a final raid on the Quark and Yoghurt shelves of the Latterie…then tack east… home across the Susten and Schollenen Gorge.
By then we should be well and truly STUFFED!!:bs

CROWN-DAY, mate….crown-day !!!

Breakfast is a solemn affair this morning :(…it’s time to move south today….towards Milano….the end of our unbelievable time in the Alps.

The end of exhilarating roads, breathtaking vistas, dizzying heights, laughter, delicious specialty-beers and Speck…the end of tornantis and cruddy, narrow single-laners leading to stunning locations.

Drawn faces and sad eyes say it all: Nobody wants to leave !!
All of us could just go on and on and on…the travelling has firmly taken hold of hearts and minds…
The sun out there doesn’t make it any easier…yet another day perfect for exploring more…further…higher…roads that could lead anywhere and throw up any surprise imaginable….and then some.

No more sniffing the wind and go “THAT way”…sure, there’s plenty of time to make Milano and we’ll take the scenic route…but it’s the last general tack we’ll make….south!!!….and out of the mountains, the REAL mountains at least…
Again, it’s just above freezing point this morning

Across the shallow Oberalp Pass to Disentis for the tack south across the Lukmanier Pass….man, it’s freezing up here.
The climb is long and un-inspiring, it sure is pretty but it doesn’t light that spark…

Karel finds a toothbrush….und puts it to good use…OY!!! 6-weeks of crud on the bike, one has to make a start somewhere…:bs

Autumn’s nearly over, the place is ready for winter….

How’s that for a shopping trolley? Yep, winter-ready!!:wow::wow:

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3718.jpg

Traffic gets thick as we join the main road towards Bellinzona…the bypass doesn’t makes things easier along the northern road through Cognasco to Locarno where things get confusing.
As far as I read it, the short piece of freeway is toll-free…navigating is getting hard, so many names, so many arrows pointing everywhere.
The endless tunnel cuts underneath the city and we pop out past Ascona along the shores of Lago Maggiore.

There’s the turn-off !!
And all of a sudden, the world changes !!!
:glu:glu:glu
The hustle and bustle are gone like a plug was pulled, the narrow valley is shady and cool….pretty, picturesque…somehow forgotten by time…

We slowly drift up the Val Cannobina…enchanted!!
The mood has changed from sad resignation to eager expectancy….a tiny single-laner framed by autumn-Gold to Falmenta irks our interest….
….OHHHH YEEAAAHHH!!!

A communal wash-house… the place where the real power of the community comes together, does the washing …and decides on politics.

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3736.jpg

One of the most lasting impressions:
Tipping into a right-hander along the valley floor, there’s a house on the outside of the corner, a short, narrow driveway leads to a porch…
And there’s Grandpa sitting outside with a towel tucked into his shirt collar , Grandma standing behind him, cutting his hair…
A domestic scene, that just belongs HERE !!

Not far from Malesco, the valley climbs steeply

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3737.jpg

Ever since we dropped down from the Lukmanier Pass in the morning, we’re back in the dense muck or smog of the industrial lowlands of Northern Italy, it just hangs around everywhere and only reaching a certain height above sea level clears the skies…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3748.jpg

Following the shores northward, Luino proves a busy place, the markets have just finished…there’s mayhem along the Esplanade…let’s keep going….
Peace and tranquillity are back on the menu in Maccagno, 5k’s further north…a picturesque, little village complete with fishing-harbour, tiny castle and tree-lined plaza….sweeeet, the place matches our mood and just the right spot for our last night on the road!!

With only 75k’s to go to Milano, there’s still a little bit of time left for one VERY last bit of exploring before things turn south via Varese for the early-to-mid-afternoon bike drop-off.
We’re 5k’s north of Luino, let’s tack into the hills and vineyards to the east of Maccagno, then drift north via that red/white dotted road (denoting “difficult” road)

The forecasted massiv low-front to hit the Alps later today is flexing it’s muscles… wind-gusts are stripping the remaining leaves off the autumn branches…
The sky is filled with all sorts of colours of millions of swirling leaves…dropping down to 40, they gently slap the leathers, jacket and visor….IT’S A DREAM !!!
It only lasts a few minutes, a few bends and a couple of short straights worth, but it’s something I’ll NEVER forget…

The last 70k’s into Milano are a real pain-in-the-arse…the lowlands are choked with a smoggy haze, traffic turns from heavy to ferociously slow…it’s hot and muggy and there are lots of stops to check for directions and turn offs.

Karel swaps the toothbrush for something more….effective?:D

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3834.jpg

After asking a scooteristi and car-driver for directions, both reply with : “Follow me”….then shoot off into the swirling traffic…but somehow we cotton back on to them and they guide us the short stretch to BiancoBlu.
THANKS TO THE LOCALS !!!
They’ll get you there…but you better be quick, damn quick!!!

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3837.jpg

Formalities are fixed quickly, Renato is nowhere to be seen….so we just grab our suitcases, stuff it all in and get out.

Trying to remember some fragments of our previous experiences of the Public Transport system, we make our way across town via bus and Underground towards the hotel that I’d booked before the trip via the Net…a small, 2-star place at the fringes of Milano’s CBD.
The wheels are coming off Goodie’s suitcase, the thing is scraping it’s bottom edge along the footpaths…it’s damn heavy, too.
And things are even hotter in the city… the first signs of commuter traffic are everywhere.
The din and hustle is nerving after the last 6 weeks…
Trees disappear, roads are getting narrower, things start to look a bit dingy….then grubby...then seedy…yup, here we are!! That’s the right address, where’s the hotel?

I go ahead to check things out…this just doesn’t feel right…

Walking through the thoroughfare towards a big courtyard complete with desolate children swing, 3ft high weeds and ringed by 5-story blocks of flats, the entrance is on the left…more stairs into a foyer…there’s a lift, one of those rattly, old monkey-cage types. It’s busted, too…up the stairs then.
The main door to the first story proclaims some hotel… wrong name… I walk in anyway.
Christ…this looks like a worn-into-the-ground wino-dump !!:eek::eek:
The 2 slimy guys in the back check my printout of the booking and deposit paid….then point up….next floor!!
Walking into the “lobby” of the next-floor-“hotel”, things look little better…. nobody around.

Some muffled noise from behind a ¾ high wall to the right….and then Danny de Vito comes marching out!!!! Well…at least a twin brother!!
All 4’6”, bald, paunchy…while shoving his shirt into the pants.
Hmmm….again the show of the printouts…

Oh maaan….that’s when things start really falling apart in a hurry.

A wall of Italian erupts…and a younger version of Oprah appears from behind that divider in the back, still straightening herself out.
Shit…sorry guys, caught you in the middle of a quickie??

The desk looks like something out of a ‘60s C-grade movie, incl. Tandy B/W monitor for the security cam scanning the entrance below…

TT shows up, worried about me and the long wait of the crew downstairs…
Arguments, hands and feet are flying for the next 20 mins….there’s no way Danny’s gonna yield and come up with some rooms.

TT’s is a second ahead of me: “Hey…” the grin grows wiiide…”these guys sell beds by the hour, mate!! This is the local knock-shop !!”
More arguing, phone calls to other “hotels” (Jeez, even if they’d come up with rooms, I think I’ll rather sleep under the bridge or the next park-bench)

He buggers off to tell the others what’s been going on up here…

One of the guys from the other “reception” shows up, 3 words of English worth, but we get things sorted. They also haven’t got any beds free downstairs, but could organize some beds with the grandma next door…and drags me along the corridor to show what’s on offer.
Grandma proudly shows off a spare bedroom with 3 single beds….straight our of the ‘20s….1720s, that is…bedsheets included… ….THAT’S IT…out of here!!!

I’m ready to tear the poor bugger to shreds, then storm upstairs, belt the shit out of Danny and his Floosie, before torching the whole farkin' suburb.

The screaming, dancing 4’6” Shithead caves in after 30 seconds and coughs up the equivalent to nearly twice the deposit I paid…let’s go!

The crew downstairs has taken matters into their own hands, Goodie and Karel have started to check the neighbourhood for another hotel or something…no luck.
The call to the Youth Hostel proves more successful…now we only have to make our way across town again, hopefully Goodie’s suitcase will make it…an hour later and all’s good.
We’ve got a bed…we know our way around and the little street-restaurant isn’t far off…let’s crack a bottle or 2!!! Danny de Vito paid for one of 'em...:chug::chug:

“What’s the problem??” :bs

There’s not much left now…Milano is, as usual, covered in a cloud of muck.

We pack up our gear; take the bus and Underground into the city for the Malpensa Express, the rail service to the airport.
We spent an hour hanging around a café at the Central Plaza, half soaking up the atmosphere of the bustle around us, the other half sunken in memories and dreams.

After checking in the baggage, I get out of the airport for one, last parting shot.

THIS IS HOW IT STARTED…..AND THIS IS HOW IT ENDS !!

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3901.jpg

A looong dream has come true….
…we all made it without prangs or injuries…
…it’s been an INCREDIBLE time…
…it’s made me a better rider…
but all that doesn’t count for NOTHING right now.

Those mountains over there just don’t let me say Goodbye,
they’re screaming at me and tearing my heart out.

One day…one day…perhaps…
Don’t mind the tears, will ya??

The 10hr. stopover in Dubai is a pain in the arse…

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3903.jpg

…the place is stinking hot and teaming with folks 24/7.

One last typical TT prank
(shoving the “beggars”-tray in front of sleeping Karel…and “seeding” it with a few coins)

http://www.glitch-oz.com/pics/07/Tornanti/4/tor3902.jpg

And here the yarn finishes after 2 months of writing and 2500 pics later.

Hope you enjoyed….and give us a HOY if it was inspiring enough for you to start and get planning YOUR OWN TORNANTI RIDE.

I’m ALWAYS for hire to the highest bidder…:so:so:so:so:so

Hey Pete
I wanna go back.....NOW...I knew there was a reason I did not feel quite right. A few 100kms here and there on some of Tassie's best roads. a few visits to the track to smell the funes from a R1 or a RS 250 Gp replica, a few 100kms on a new GTR..after one read of this I'm sorry none of the above is doing it for me :( I want those soaring Mountains - as much as they give you that feeling of clautraphobia, as much as you dread the next flat plate of cow splatt, as much as you hate the next bike coming around the hairpin at you in your lane..it's just..what yu want. Yeah....exactly the way it is.
Haven't even clocked 1000k's since we're back...and somehow the drive is missing to get out there and ride more. It'll come back....it's been the same after the "Fire 'n Ice" NZ-tour...after that it took over 3 months to actually look forward to a day-ride around home...there are just too many things missing.:wink:

( i can picture that gasthof in Austria with the church steeple bell chiming in my ear at 6AM - hey there's a mountain out here waiting for you.)

Well, mate.....

....after some careful consideration (which took an excruciating 10 mins or so):so:so

....Tornanti #2 is ON

Goodie and I wiped the map on the wall :wow:, pencilled in all the bits we've missed this time around...then came up with TWO LOOPS (a Western Alps and Eastern Alps) stringing together the "missed areas" with a good whack of the BEST stuff we've done this time.

It's on again for the same time-slot (Sept/ Oct) 2009, but this time only for 3 weeks of riding/ travelling, start and finish will be Munich/ Germany...or Salzburg/ Austria....where ever we can get some decent bikes from.
I'll start digging soon on that score...(just let me know how many bikes we need, aye?:chug:)

Back on the board is Slovenia, the Vrsic Saddle, Mangart, and an extended loop incl. Lake Bled.
All the tiny single-laners around Comeglians, the Panoramica-loop (dirt) and the climb to Mt. Paularo, all of it just south of the Austrian border in the Friuli region/Italy...on our way to the Dolomites.
Remember the Gasthof with all those different Schnapps-bottles out the back? Yep, around that area...

Timmelsjoch, Jaufen Pass and Passo di Stelvio....Passo di Gavia (and a re-run of the Foppa). Passo di Boldo!! (the one with all the hairpins in tunnels)...
A quick run up the Bernina to St. Moritz for THOSE views!!

Then 2 loops further south, west of Lago di Como...Passo di Vivione and the rest of single-laner heaven in the area ( 6 passes strung end-to-end) :glu:glu

And just for YOU, mate :so:so:so...the 365 bends from Chur!!! to Arosa, another "good one" we missed...

We've gotta tack on another week for family and biz, but will get 3 full weeks in!

Shit...that's what addiction does for ya :so:so
Gimme a HOY if you're on again :so:bang::bang::bang::bs

That's one of the reasons...you don't really want to be about when those Euros are on Holidays...
Weather is perfect in autumn, it still gets pretty warm, even up top.
The harvesting is in full swing then...and with that come all those little, local fiestas and gatherings that add even more colour to the autumn colours....

The occasional low-front that time of year makes for spectacular views when the peaks carry "white-caps" (even though it might impeded on "progress" for a day or so) after a night's worth of snowfalls up around the tops.
Small weather fronts make for incredible skies, cloud-formations and the softer light of a late summer....the mood is different.

To wrap it up, prices also go back to low-season levels, making for about 20-50% savings for accomodation, cheaper bike rental etc etc

It's really the same as what it is in the southern parts of AUS...best time is after Easter (if you don't mind nippy mornings), sparkler days, empty roads, low-season pricing and...most important...far less insects to sweeten the time off-the-bike.

Say what!!......I may suffer a divorce but.....Yeeeeee....haaa...I'm in. Hmmm....just saying that has made me feel better already :))
Ps it was when you mentioned Lake Bled that did it for me....and don't forget the Guzzi factory this time!!! I saw it pop up in the Long Way Down I have been watching over Christmas.

Panoramica (similar stretch as the Assietta...but more extreme, more like a dirt-version of the Mangart....knarly, mate...knarly).
Mt. Paularo is about 20km dirt each way, climbing from 450m above sea-level to just over 2000...same area, same topography....you know what that means :bs
A couple of side-valleys in the back of Lake Bled...about 75k all up.

You can bet your arse there'll be MORE !!:so:so:so

Well, I managed to get through this epic ride report but I fear there may be some excess download charges in next month's optus bill. :D

Looked like a friggin awesome trip and I'm more than a little jealous. I've yet to visit Europe at all... must do something about that now that I'm feeling inspired. :chug:

It certainly was an incredible trip....and subsequently more than one of the crew are hopelessly infected by the "Alps-bug".
3 months after and well and truely back "in the grind", there are regular pangs of "blackouts", when all one sees are glaciers, imposing mountains, winding roads and bends, bends, bends, peaks stacked row after row, narrow bands of asphalt snaking along some lightly-timbered hillside...it hits like a bout of Malaria.

It lasts for about 20mins to an hour at a time, there's no participating in real-time, one becomes totally unresponsive and uncommunicable to everything else around....
Yeah, Alps-fever is a curse....and SOOO enjoyable. :so:so:so

Somehow the buzz is missing, the mountains, vistas...different cultures, signs, languages, money, foods, road-markings....
I'm sure it'll come back after a while...

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to. My bikes languish in the garage while I count down the days until my next trip. I live in Virginia near the Shanandoah valley and have thousands of miles of backroads running up and down the Appalachain mountains and valleys. Gorgeous riding. Doesn't hold a candle to the Alps.

A major part of it is that both of our countries are fairly young and just haven't had the hundreds of years of poking roads into the hinterlands that the Europeans have had.

It's all the things that you alluded to above, plus the difference of hitting the road for multiple days on the bike rather than just hopping on it for a quick day ride.

I don't know whether I'm looking forward more to arriving in Zurich in July for two weeks on a GS or spending 3 months or so in 2009 mucking about North America when I retire. I think that it's more wanting the longer riding experience than the culture shift, but when you add them together it's a hard combination to beat.

In message 105 (P. 21), you said

No idea what this is, looks interesting, though…

It's the Grand St. Bernard tunnel coming out of the mountain on the south side. It cuts out of the mountain, across the valley and deposits the traffic under the snow sheds. Traffic never knows that it's in a bridge (of sorts) for the final few hunderd meters. Another view from a bit more uphill looing south:

Thanks for a superb writeup (so far - I haven't finished yet) I'm glad to see that you found Passo Manghen - it's one of my favorite little passes. Vivione is another - much like Manghen, but less people. I have a soft spot for the little one lane (or less) roads winding through the countryside.

Cheers!

Check out Moto Mader just outside of Zurich. I abandoned Renato last summer and rented from them. BMW dealer - all NEW stock and about 2/3 of Renato's price.

They have a 1200GS waiting for me in July :D

so i'm wondering why not July or August?

Europe is on vacation in August. Early July has fairly warm weather and not too crowded.

I was amazed at the clarity of the photos - summer months tend to be a bit hazy and those long shots down the valley tend to fade into grey.

I think that I may run into you guys in 2009.

Right on the money, mate!!!
Exactly the way we feel, just couldn't be bothered to get out for a day-ride on roads that we've ridden endless times before...

Thanks for that !! It just looked baffling....an aquaeduct? Pumping tunnel for a hydro-power station?
Your explanation makes sense.

Oh man....the Manghen !!! What a beauty !!
Vivione and many others like it are on the list for Tornanti#2 next year !
And "Hell Yeah" to the small backblock lanes and roads, that's where the real fun is, leave the rest to the tourists.
Lots of that kind of stuff in the Hautes Alpes/ Mediterranean Alps....and in Slovenia as well as the Friuli region of Italy (just below the Austrian border).

Thanks for that one...will check if Emirates Air offers flights from Dubai-Zurich.
With only 3 weeks on our hands we really want to "rent where we land" to make the best of the time.
Problem here is, that we also need a few bikes at a time....getting one or 2 GS's or such isn't a problem....but which dealer (apart from a dedicated rental-outfit) keeps a half-dozen or so GS's ready for rent?

Now...that'd be something !!! :thumbs::thumbs:
I rather prefer the autumn, we had exceptional weather last time, often warm (to TOO warm sometimes), but copped the first snow up high to make the vistas even more spectacular.
Then add the autumn-colours and the whole place turns that mucher "warmer/ softer" again.....very little traffic everywhere, the harvest-fiestas are in full swing, low-season prices on everything and plenty of space/ beds available everywhere.
Which means, that often the hosts have the time to sit down and talk...another point I value a lot, the contact with locals.

Yo....air quality would be better too, due to less traffic and some nippy nights cleaning up the previous' day muck.

This is by far the most beautiful RR I've ever seen. I started on ADVrider and now I'm here, glued to the screen and not getting much done at work as I suspect a few other lucky addicts. It occurred to me that this trip has no lo lites, everyday is paradise even when it rains. My only regret is that I didn't take notes from the time I started reading and keep a detailed log of your itinerary so that someday in the future when I'm confronted by the genie who grants me one wish, I can follow the same exact course. What a beautiful experience. Is there such an itinerary already written or do I have to do it the hard way? thanks for all your efforts, I'm really enjoying this trip.

G'day

First up a Big Welcome!!
...and a big "Thanx" for the praise
You're right, there were NO lo-lites....a few little moments which in hindsight turned out to be real funny.
And yes, there IS an itinerary, all 50-odd pages of it, with full listings on possible accom/ addys/phone numbers/ weblinks etc etc....it's nearly as big as the RR :bs
As things go though, we only followed the itinerary in a general sense.
Weather and circumstances made us shorten some stretches, alter the planned routes to suit the day, dropping a couple of day's worth of itinerary for the sake of something else.
At best, only about 50% of the itinerary worked out as planned.
On the other hand there were quite a few places we got to that weren't on the plans.

To follow the route the exact same way, it'd really be best to read it again, grab some maps (let me know, I'll pass on which one's to get) and make up your own itinerary.

:clap: Go for it mate....that's what it's there for :so

After sorting through countless gig's worth of pics at the strt, I had NO intention whatsoever to write this "Ben Hur" version of a RR.
Then I looked at the handwritten notes in the little diary...and was instantly back right there and then, head and heart on-the-spot...on-the-day.

Things just started to gush out, lots of tiny details came to the fore....and away it went, growing obscenely as the days rolled by...:doh:

Wrote the German version parallel, which also turned out quite well, creeping close to 30.000hits on Alpenbiker.
The site where the pics are stored had 558.000hits in Feb 08...and it ONLY carries the pics, nothing else. Looks like that number will be exceeded this month, if numbers keep rolling at the same rate.

Links pointing to either of the versions are spread all around the globe, google gives some astounding results ....from Norway to South American Forums, private websites to referral sites...it's everywhere.

Strangely, there seems to be no pattern to it. The story sank (possibly due to it's size?) in some forums, doing extremely well in others....and it seemed to have nothing to do with the number or members those forums have got.

Whatever... enjoy the second lap around, mate

The next yarn will start in about 8 weeks from now :so:so

Finished reading after about 1 month, started on ADV rider, what a great writeup, mind you, the location helped a fair bit. After skiing the dolomites and in Austria I've thought a bloke could have fun here on a bike:rolleyes: actually saw 2 BM outfits in Italy, middle of winter, blowing heaps of smoke, looking as old as the hills and I was a tad envious. Anyway, top read, well done chaps:clap:

Well guys Time to rev you up a bit ready for Suisse (and the rest) a quick flash back to Tornanti 1..hee..hee

Star Date October 1, 2007

"We head for the Dolomites Mtns today. Its a boring commuter run to Bolzen and congestion galore..hmm..reminds me of Melb.Oz. But Pete soon gets us around the centrale chaos. We use the Sarntal valley with its 10.8Kms of tunnels. In a few of these I hold my breath so as not to consume the diesel fumes that almost choke you. It's in this state of semi-narcosis I invent a few notes of the road rules learned so far on T1..so here goes:

1) A scooter can pass either side w/out signalling
2) A scooter can use both lanes and lane split
3) A roundabout is a place to meet people
4) Overtaking can occurr anywhere, the closer the better
5) A red light is a place for bikes to sit first (cab off the rank)
6) slow moving vehicles must always be passed regardless of the road ahead
7) oncoming bikes may use your lane and theirs at the same time
8) "Stop" means think about it
9) Pedestrain crossings are black and white death strips - NO one enters them when traffic is moving
10) Cow shit stinks and will spit you off if you try to ride it
11) Beware Merc/BMW/Audi drivers who cannot stay right when a bike is behind them

...And some just for Italy
12) Speed signs are multiplication tests you need to know the max speed is 2x what's on the sign
13) Police can and will pass inside a tunnel on a solid white line

Ok ...back to the tunnel I take a breath of the fresh, crisp Mtn air and we exit into 12 degs C after the tunnel temps reach double that mid point and we push on to Brixen to meet Rudi and the Alpen bikers..and a fang up the Wuerzjoch ...the Dolomites are calling us back...to be continued..on T2

Cheers
Tim Tim
