There are two things I have learned about Tassie this trip.
First, Whatever time you set aside to ride the South Island, itís never enough.
Second, Donít forget to take the charger for your camera! You need it.
:( :(

We headed off; on one of the last 35-degree days that summer could muster. Fighting Melbourneís traffic was no fun with your winter riding gear. Tassie can get cold and wet.

Get down the Pier and look whatís there. Are we going to get lucky and sail in comfort?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/tassie009.jpg

No such luck this is there to waiting for us.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/tassie018.jpg

But first thereís some waiting to be done.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/tassie016.jpg

The nice crew and had just washed the decks down. Water and greasy steel, not my favourite surface to ride on. But we made it, along with a few others.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/IMG_3558.jpg

The crossing didnít seem to bad but they seemed to be over excurrent with the stabilisers, which made the roll of the ship very jerky. That and something crashing metal on metal below deck made for a rotten sleep.
Got off the ferry early and out into Davenportís peek hour traffic. Saw two cars. Havenít the Taswegians heard of car-pooling?

We had been told of an all night bakery in Westbury and the cooked breakfast was well worth the stop.

Through Launceston and off down the A3 towards Scottsdale and St Helens.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/IMG_3562.jpg

Our first sign of rain was going over the range to St Helens. A quick stop for some to don their wet weather gear.
First and only time for this trip. Not bad for Tassie.

A couple of the locals
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/tassie049.jpg

After the lack of sleep floating on Bass Strait and a large healthy lunch, we all were having troble with concentration so it was decided to head for our accommodation in Bicheno and sadly not do St Maryís and Elephant Pass.

The best is still to come.[/b]

Day 2 was just cruse down to Hobart via Coles Bay Swansea and Sorell, a really beautiful part of the world. Well worth stopping and doing the walk out around Cape Tourville and the lighthouse. One day I will do the longer walk into Wineglass Bay

Whilst in Hobart we stayed at Somerset on Salamanca just near the Salamanca Markets. Secure underground parking, 5 star, 2 bedroom apartment right in the center of Hobart. It did spoil us though. I donít think I am going to get the others camping ever again.

Thereís a new attraction at Derwent Bridge. Someone is carving the history of Tasmania into a long wall and itís all out of Huon Pine. It really is spectacular and while it will take him 5 or 6 years to complete it is well worth having a look at what heís finished and watch him work. I will be back to see this again.

Most of the organized tours were going to take to long, as we had to be in Burnie before it got dark and my partner was getting nervous about all the stories she had heard previously.

So we charted a Put Put boat to go out to Hells Gate and back. I made myself comfortable down the back and let someone else do all the work.

I have to get my camera battery charged so itís off to find a camera shop thatís kind enough to do the deed. Also time to burn some pictures to CD. The cards are full. The worst problem is that it will take a couple of hours of precious daylight. I had to do this in Hobart but the camera is flat again. I can usually go away for a week or two and not have to charge my camera but when in Tasmania you just seem to be dragging the camera out a lot more often.

But first, a cruse up Cataract Gorge

Today I woke up wanting pancakes, Elephant Pass pancakes. Not that I had ever had them before but I wanted to catch a few roads that we had missed and Pancakes for lunch sounded good.

Today was a do what you want day so I made the suggestion but no one was keen. The boys wanted to head up the Tamar valley and do the excellent mine museum at Beaconsfield and see some submarine that was heading out to sea. She that must be obeyed didnít want to ride to far and besides it looked like a blustery day.

So thatís it, Iím by myself. I didnít get away till late morning so I had better keep it moving. I was pushing the limits down main highway and the cars seemed to stay out of my way. Evan got a wave from a cop a bit south of Perth that seemed to give me their blessing. Sometimes there are benefits in riding a white bike.

Turn of at Conara and follow the Esk valley with its longish straits and sweeping bends. Probably a boring road for Tassie if one stuck to the speed limits but I was enjoying it. Caught up to a WRX with a pushbike on the roof that suddenly slowed and let me passed but then sat behind me as we carved up the valley. It was fun glancing in the mirrors and watching that bike move around on the roof. I fully expected to see it fly off the back or at lest come down hard on the roof as we pushed it a little harder though the curves. But when the road tightened up the Mr. WRX backed off.

Straight through St Maryís and on down St Maryís pass, stopping only long enough to take this.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/IMG_3804.jpg

Before doing a u-turn and back up the pass. Then off down Elephants Pass only to be stopped by this.

After the best pancake ever (sorry Mum) it was down Elephants Pass and down the highway through Bicheno didnít stop I'm off to do Iffracemís dream road. http://www.austouring.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=91
And heís right, what a great road, only saw one car. I just had it to myself. Although it was a bit damp, I stayed dry behind the fairing, and the road stayed grippy.
Met Highway 1 at Campbell Town but stayed with it only for a couple of kís. Iím heading for the Great Western Tiers but Iím not sure the weather will hold. Time to stop for a warm drink and wait for some rain to pass at Poatina. Itís getting cold and Iím missing my coat liner. I didnít think it was going to get too cold today.
The rain stops and Iím off up those lovely switchbacks of the Great Western Tiers to

The views not great.

The Temperatures not good either
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/IMG_3810.jpg

Iím struck with the whatís around the next corner syndrome? And probably I should have headed home but Iím off to see what the Great Lake looks like.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c259/farawayman/Tassie%2006/IMG_3816.jpg

I head deeper into unknown highlands. I can remember seeing on the map (I forgot to bring it with me) a road around the Great Lake and back down the escarpment to Golden Valley and Deloraine. I stop for a leak, which couldnít be far from the turn off and get something floating around inside my helmet and open my visor right up to get rid of it and to my disgust its not a bug, its white and there is many more of them floating around outside my helmet.
I thinks itís time to head back to Launceston and a hot bath.

Bugger! :x

First up to Beauty Point to see some Sea Horses, a promise I had made to get away yesterday. The most interesting thing I saw up there was someone upsetting the tourists by pulling in a reasonable Barracouta and belting it over the head a few times before putting his fingers into itís mouth to extract the hook.

Back to Exeter and off towards Devenport before turning off and finding a salad roll for lunch at Deloraine. Weíre heading for the road that I didnít do yesterday.

And how good is it.

This mad Yank had wanted to miss the American winter so was riding around a lot of the country. He had been volunteering up at Cradle Mountain for the last 10 days. He thought it was warmer back home.
