Flinders Ranges and South Australia

It was a cool and sunny ride for ozav8r and myself starting last Friday 31st of March.

There were no pic's on the ride to SA as we were kinda in a hurry as there was 840 or so km to complete before nap time.

Ready to leave AM Friday.

But we made it to the Clare Valley, just in time to murder a couple of South Australian Reds, before slipping off into zzzz mode.

The Accomodation ( quite fine I must say ) www.wutheringheights.com.au

Glen Morris cottage.

It was very romantic, but we didn't have time for romance. We quaffed down the complementary bacon and eggs and hit the road.

Destination Angorachina Village in the Flinders Ranges.

We made a stop at Jamestown.

That's the ANZ bank, one of the few places still trading in Jamestown. Alas it was Saturday, so it was closed too....

Then up the highway to Orrorroo (try saying that after a bottle of Shiraz) :bt

We stopped at Hawker to refuel and have a pie, then made a quick detour to Wilpena Pound Village.

20 km from Hawker.

The scenic Bunyeroo Gorge was our first taste of Flingers Ranges dirt roads. :glu

So this guy rocks up on my doorstep at the wee hours of the morning of our Flinders departure- is he excited? You'd be the judge......
20170331_100751-M.jpg

We stopped off in Maldon for morning tea.
20170331_101440-S.jpg

Portuguese Custard tart and some other stuff that Dougie ordered. I wasn't able to wipe that grin off his face for the next 7 days:bs
20170331_150408-M.jpg

Had a quick stop in Keith to pay our respects to Andy Caldecott
20170331_150427-M.jpg

The Africa Twin performed flawlessly throughout. Had just done the high fender conversion a couple ogf days before we set off, but that proved to be a waste as conditions remained bone dry throughout the whole trip. In fact, didn't need the warm liners either, so conditions was ideal.
20170401_093453_001-M.jpg

The Alpacas on our farm in Clare Valley - Nelson and Tollo were a bit sceptical about the arrival of a couple of motorcycles on their doorstep.

20170401_111853-M.jpg

Made it to Orroroo - spirits still high!
20170401_144446-M.jpg

The mighty Honda (i'm starting to sound like Williamson...) in the Flinders. No better tool for the job at hand. The Motoz Tractionators performed brilliantly in the dirt. The combination of DCT and good tires, can make it look like even someone like yours truly, actually know what he's doing.....
20170401_144604-M.jpg

SSpot Dougie - he's there somewhere! The gorgeous Bunyeroo scenic drive - - well worth the sore butt to get there.
20170402_031229-M.jpg

Made it to Angorichina - and happily ensconced in the tent for the night.

To be continued....

We settled in with the ADV crew and enjoyed an Evening BBQ.

The next day we were off on an explore of our new surroundings.

There are some very big DUCKS in the Flinders Ranges. They don't fly, but man can they run

Great dirt roads everywhere - ADV paradise
20170402_144243-M.jpg

Ruins "everywhere" in the north of South Australia. A constant reminder of the hardships the early settlers must have encountered and of how many new arrivals made the big mistake of building a farm on the East (wrong) side of the "Goyder-line".

After a trip - 500 pictures of one's motorcycle with a slightly different background. I still turn around and look back after I've parked the Africa Twin......

There's that grin again - doesn't go away! - I think beer o'clock was mentioned...
20170403_084706-M.jpg

This character had ridden in to the rally from Esperance (2.200 kays each way) in this gear. Did anyone mention "Mad Max?"

Dirt, as far as the eye can see........

Just finished the "PAR" - Public Access Route out of Glass Gorge and we're feeling right happy about life. Nothing new there....

Brachina Gorge was ehemm - Gorgeous....
20170404_122453-M.jpg

We stopped at Quorn on the way South. Dougie points to the big void that's about to be filled by "Parmageddon" the obligatory meal that's the intake-test for the Quorn Schnitzel Club.
20170404_125430-M.jpg

Here it is - Ned Kelly Napoli Schnitzel- allegedly made with kangaroo, that turned out to be beef. It was very noyce anyhooo....
20170404_132950-M.jpg

20170404_132959_001-M.jpg

Having one's picture taken with the publican - after completion of the test (meal) is another mandatory ritual before the selection committee of the Quorn Schnitzel Club decides on whether one is worth for admission. I have confidence we both made it across the line..
20170404_170203-M.jpg

Back at our B&B - Wuthering Heights on the way south. This is the main house - Bronte Manor built out of mud-
bricks and railway sleepers from the Old Ghan Railway.

At the National Motor Museaum in Birdwood SA. Getting inspiration on how (not) to pack for the next trip.
20170405_113325-M.jpg

Out of all the 100's of bikes and cars on display - this is my absolute favorite! A joint venture project between a motorbike dealer in Adelaide and a burgeoning Yamaha in Japan produced this gem called Liberty Ranch Model. Pete - if I find one in a barn somewhere, will you help restoring it?
20170405_113405-M.jpg

Who knew there were umlauts in "Tanami" - very funny, and this one is also a Suzuki as Dougie discovered
20170405_113657-M.jpg

A couple of Andi Caldecott's bikes were on display
20170405_114320-M.jpg

And then there's this...

My favorite though, as I already mentioned is this:
