....... AKA Two Weeks on a Bike (Almost).

Phil and I are heading to Wooli (on the NSW North Coast near Grafton) for the 2017 OzSTOC National Rally. The plan is:

  • Monday 16 October, ride to Binalong via the Hume Highway
  • Tuesday 17 to Friday 20, zig zag our way north via Mudgee, Armidale, Woodenbong.
  • Friday and Saturday nights at Wooli.
  • Sunday 22 to Friday 27, zig zag our way home via, Tinonee, Windsor, Greenwell Point, Delegate and Bruthen.
Twelve days on the road and I'm gunna make it home.......

It could be twice this:

Planning for two weeks on a bike is almost complete. Day 1, Monday 16 October 2017 is a quick sprint up the Hume Highway and overnight at the Binalong pub, via a quick stop at, or near, Phil's place.

Phil's planning has been a bit more involved and interesting. After deciding that none of his Harleys, Triumphs, Suzukis, Yamahas, or solos or outfits were good enough for the trip, so he went a bought another GSX1400. This one without a sidecar. I'll post some pics in due course.

He keeps looking for a motorcycle to match the Mighty ST1300, I reckon he ought to just buy one.

Anyway, Day 1:

PS. In anticipation that Photobucket and I will eventually suffer a separation, I've (on the recommendation of another Forum member) started an ImgBB account. If the above is any indication, this might be the start of a successful relationship.

I'm planning for Day 2 and Day 3 to be a little more interesting.

Day 2, a long way from Binalong to Mudgee:
Day_2.jpg

Pub booked, short walk to brewery, life's good.

Day 3, Mudgee to Armidale via some unfinished business - Dangars Falls:

Pub booked, short walk to bar, life's real good.

Day 4 is to be even more interesting. Armidale to Woodenbong:

Some local (OzSTOC member from Guyra) advice is that there is some unfriendly gravel road from between Tenterfield and Legume. I reckon we'll get some further advice from some Tenterfield locals before we tackle that road, or find an alternative.

Either way, the pub at Woodenbong is booked, life is ........

No, not that bit of the Mount Lindsay Road. The bit between Legume and Woodenbong (in your link) we rode in 2013, reported in this thread http://austouring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4644&highlight=april-on-a-bike&page=5

The link discusses the upgrade of 11.3km of the road completed in 2016. I've ridden that section this twice now - the first in 2013; the second in 2015, when we went a separate ways, a couple of days after Hayseys' last ride. The 2015 ride was better than 2013, some of the upgrade had been completed.

The section I have bad reports about is this: https://goo.gl/maps/3sW9HyopAjt

There's a couple of bits in that section (probably only 5km and 10km) that I've had a recommendation to avoid. But hey, 5km and 10km, I think we'll give it a crack.

Around 13km after Legume there's a turn-off from where we follow Toolum Road, then after around 28km there's Urbenville. Toolum Road is one of the sweetest, single lane, sealed, tree covered (through tunnels of foliage in parts) roads I've ridden in these parts, from memory better than Lions Road and Spring Creek Road.

Here it is: https://goo.gl/maps/DaPxXhjCxJq

Methinks some pics will be in order.

Ok...didn't know there was another piece of dirt in that stretch. W-)

Agree with the Toolum Rd....nice continuation of the Paddys Flat Rd. coming from Tabulam (which is dirt, ~70k's)
