Maybe. I'm always enthralled by the old buildings which housed these educational establishments. They were built at a time when buildings were elaborate. They're of a past generation now. Probably the roots of TAFE colleges. They were places where people went to learn or hone their trades. They also became the town libraries for technical and reference materials, and later, general books. Almost every country town had one. They were also the local hall. Variously called "Institutes, Mechanics Institutes, School of Arts or Athenaeum. Just in Victoria, there are still over 500 still in existance, of the 1200 or so which were originally established. One of these days I'll get around to taking a photo of all of them, then start on the rest of the states.

In NSW local Halls are always known as "School of Arts"
I too love old buildings and wonder what it was like when they were being constructed and first in use..the thousands that have learnt in them and enjoyed local activities in them - social hubs.
Now its all facebook and dashcams...
Thanks for the great post
