Miss Ally's first grand moto tour

I'm not a mechanic or a bike designer, but I can think of a couple of reasons why modern bikes probably don't have fuel taps.

1. They have a fuel gauge, a fuel warning light or some other visual feature to advise the rider that they are low on fuel. This performs the same or superior function to the old style fuel tap with a reserve. Something starts flashing, you look for a petrol station.

2. Having a fuel system which causes the bike to splutter to a stop without warning while there is still fuel in the tank is creating a potentially dangerous situation where that situation need not exist.

3. EFI systems required a pressurised fuel system. I suspect that most manual fuel taps would cause leak points or weak points in the system.

1. Fuel gauge - check. Chester the Stubborn has one of them...it had been sitting on "E" for at least 60km....:bs

2. To clarify, at speed every old skool bike I have had with a reserve tap will splutter and give enough warning so you can turn the tap before the bike cuts out....so long as you know where the tap is....

3. :so pressurised system means bike will run right up to the last drop....

The rain and cold put an end to our plans to walk to Marlo coastal trails.

We decided to stay closer to home and take in Orbost.

I'm not a mechanic or a bike designer, but I can think of a couple of reasons why modern bikes probably don't have fuel taps.

Only gravity-fed systems have a manual fuel-cock with 2 different length pickup-tubes inside the tank to create a manual reserve level via the pickup heights/ levels.

Just about no bike with a fuel-pump ( feeding carb or EFI) has a manual reserve tap as a fuel-pump only has a single intake level...at the bottom of the tank.
A secondary tube inside the tank would suck air at some stage, fouling the mixture as well as wrecking the pump in the process.

Most modern fuel-pumps also sit inside a small well at the bottom of the tank, sacrificing a small amount of tank capacity of around 1liter for the pump to stay submerged, using the remaining fuel as a coolant to prevent the pump from burning out.

(i.e. V-Strom tank has a well that's too small (about 0.4liter) to cool the pump, resulting fuel-pump seizures are fairly common amongst those owners who like to test the tank-capacity/ reach too often).
