Re: My first 14 Days-Trip to the North of New Zealand

I noticed on the map that you have a trip from Taupo south to Turangi and then back to Taupo. I wouldn't bother to be honest. That piece of road isn't particularly exciting and it doesn't even follow the edge of the lake for much of the way. There is nothing to see or do at Turangi (unless you are a fisherman who like standing chest deep in the river at dawn fly fishing) when you get there.

If you are going to travel down the road to get somewhere then fine but a return trip won't provide any thrills in any way.

correctly K1W1,:chug:

the way to Turangi in google map was wrong.
unfortunately I could not correct this error.

Wellington northbound, desert, lakes, west coast drive, 2 or even 3 volcanic craters,
visiting of some of attractions along the way and succesfully driving of any types of roads.
promising sections with scenic roads.

and even I want to visit some places in the northern part too......

with only a rest of a few days, before the return flight from auckland .

i´m not will be the first, who come back again to the islands of NZ:bs

with greetings from austria

Hello, friends

Can someone tell me, if there is a cross-connection, from Masterton via Mt. Barton and Cape Palliser to Wellington?
Thanks for Help
Hans

In a word. No.

I'm not sure where Mt Barton is but you can't go west from Masterton The Tararua Ranges are some of the most rugged and inaccessible country that you will find anywhere. Walking only.

On the east coast near Masterton there are only roads that go to the coast (Castlepoint, White Rock, etc) but nothing that goes along the coast.

If you open this page.

You can drive/ ride to the coast where it says Ocean Beach. You then used to be able to ride (trail bikes but not real difficult) around the coast west to where it says Wainuiomata Coast. At that point you had to got through a section of private property right where the river meets the sea. We used to have no problems getting permission for club rides but I don't know what the situation is like today. I can check with my bro if you want he will probably know what the current story is.

From there you cannot go any further around the coast to Wellington you need to follow the road up the Wainuiomata (pronounced Why-nu-e-o-mar-ta) valley road to Wainuiomata township then over the hill to Petone (pronounced Pet-o-nee).

BTW. If you are coming into Masterton from the north there is a Kiwi sanctuary at Mt Bruce that is worth a stop.

P.S. If you do follow the coast (above) you will miss out on riding the Rimutaka Grand Prix track (more properly named the Rimutaka Hill Road or SH2 to be boring) between Featherston and Kaitoke. You will live your life in misery if you find out you were within a few Kms of one of the best roads in Australia or NZ and you didn't ride it!
