I had a week off work and a destination. FarRiders were meeting for lunch at Urbenville NSW on Saturday. Its a 1600km direct run from Melbourne, but there are so many great roads between here and there to be ridden, and all I needed was a way to string them together... following the tracks of the guys who rode these roads before motorcycles were invented... the bushrangers.
I left home at sparrows fart on Wednesday. After a run through the hills out to Flowerdale my first stop was Mansfield, where a monument in the middle of the roundabout in the main street stands to commemorate the policemen shot by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark creek
Around the corner at the cemetary is the grave of one of the policemen
Next stop was Glenrowan, where the whole town survives on the memory of Ned Kelly
Up the Hume Hwy to NSW and turn off to head into the hills. Near Tumbarumba is Magginnetys Gap Road, where a policeman, Magginity, was shot by bushranger “Mad” Dan Morgan,
From here I headed up the Elliot way and down the Snowy Mountains Hwy to hit the coast at Bega, then north. Next stop here was Nerrigundah, where another monument in the Main Street (if you can call it that in this 3 house town) in the place where the Clarke gang shot and killed Constable Miles O’Grady.
Constable O’Grady was buried in Moruya cemetary.
