Some little side-tracks to get us onto the ridges above Falls Creek for some stunning Alpine views...

The run into Mt. Beauty is sweet...again, very little traffic and no liquefying road surface through the corners, the last re-seal seems to have finally, hopefully, put an end to that.

Across to Myrtleford, stuffing our faces at Heiner’s Bakery.
Traffic finally drops after the dam-wall at Lake Buffalo for the hop across the ridge into a packed-out Gentle Annie.

Some major work was done on that route, it’s all pretty smooth apart from the coarse gravel on the climb from the lake... which shows up the need for a long overdue new front hoop.

Easy sailing near Black Range Creek

Whitfield Pub
has turned the full-bullshit "Wannabe-Designer-Retreat”... and in hindsight we should’ve traded the piddly, snack-sized $20 Wagyu-Burger with a thimble of overcooked “organic” chips for a couple more of those :chug::

Xmas2012_051.JPG

Vitamin B still rules over Omega3/6/whogivesashit and the stale MKR-touch of a tiny mint leaf on the seven dead-as-doornail-chips is getting pretty boring.:doh:

One good thing is the selection of on-tap beers though!!
THAT is the only real improvement...and the Café opposite still has REAL food at REAL prices.

There’s always the little country-pub in Moyhu down the road, too...gotta run, the mozzies are after my blood... vicious buggers, here in the King Valley!!

Trying to out-run the looming weather change on the way home, there’s no skipping on a couple of nice places to climb off and enjoy the vistas.
Myrrhee vineyards...follow the line of sight to Lake Mokoan and Cobram/ Yarrawonga.

Xmas2012_052.JPG

Short of Mansfield we tack north for the climb up Mt. Samaria. The well kept, little campsite at Blue Range Creek is nearly deserted...and the forestry style road of years ago hasn’t seen any maintenance for years.

Things are getting washed out, water-runnels everywhere, roots, rocks, sides getting overgrown; most of the walking tracks and signs have vanished into the bush, nature’s taking over again.

Both camp-sites near the ridge are shut off with gates.
Also disappearing...remnants of the old timber-camp and bush-railway.:(

Xmas2012_054.JPG

It's getting fairly rough in patches, and many washouts are deep and rocky enough to stop a normal car bumping through/over it, even at a very careful crawl.
Awesome views across to The Paps, Cathedrals, Strathbogie Ranges and Lake Nillacootie....and the incoming weatherfront.

The only smooth bit comes at the northern end of the ridge,

Xmas2012_058.JPG

just as the road drops pretty steeply towards Swanpool... the descent is rocky, rough and loose and good for a few “brown moments”...then more of the same on the few shortish steep bits back to the highway, this time add “overgrown” to the mix.

Great brecky on the timber-deck of the Midland Caravan Park Kiosk, then immediately back onto some smoother stuff up the flanks of the Strathbogies.

Xmas2012_060.JPG

The usual run west to Highlands and Yea...things are pretty dusty, it’s bone-dry up here....but the rock-pools at Polly McQuinns are still full to the brim and the water’s foaming down between those big boulders.:so

Been thinking a lot about how to finish this off.
...it’s not just the bits falling off all the time...
...or the constant oil-drips and rags on the garage floor...
....or running bone-dry 300m short of Yea after a paltry 367k’s
...or all the other items and issues....
...why bother with a non-Strom? W-)W-)

Keep pushing, mate...the Suzuki shop’s over there:p....and do THEY HAVE A DEAL FOR YOU!!

Just park that Tiger next to the last trade-in, that CB13, thanks...:bees::bees: :bs

great photos pete. would love to do rides like these. i like your tents too.

sorry about the tiger (should have bought a jap bike! :p). was it a break down or just ran out of fuel?

our ride to bruthen was through the alpine road. that road is just a heavenly blast. those 60 kmph marked corners and most of us had $1.20 in our pockets throughout. awesome fun!
