A little scootering round Bali

A few pics from my tour of Bali last week.

I generally hire a 125cc scooter when in Bali or anywhere else in SE Asia as they are cheap, anyone can fix them, and they are less likely to be stolen. And you can't argue with the price of about $4 per day. For example, some running repairs on the trip, a bum tail-light replaced in Bangli for a quoted price 10000rp, or $1. I gave him 20000.

This trip I rode up through the coast from Kuta/Legian through Sanur, up through Candidasa, then through Amlapura and a two night stop in Amed. Distances are pretty short but it can be tiring due to heat, traffic and general craziness of Asian roads.

Gunung Agung (Mt Agung), the tallest mountain and active volcano in Bali, around 3000m, from Amed a dive resort on the east coast. If you look closely you can see fire down the flank, I thought this was a lava flow for a while but it's just bushfires.

While in Amed I wanted to ride up the coast to see Agung at closer range.

Up through Tulamben and then Kubu, where I found a road west up into the foothills.

Higher up in the hills. The east coast tends to be hotter and dryer, and the terrain and scrub looks almost Australian. There's always a volcano or Balinese temple to remind you where you are though.

Then in was on and up to Ubud, but via Amlapura, Rendang, Bangli and Kintamani.

@Glitch has taught me well... always research the route first

Looks like it was windy, the plants and trees bowing over and the smoke on the volcano heading out to the right. How close do people live to the volcano?

Yeah was a windy day when I went up Robbie. People live about a third of the way up and lots of towns on the coast nearby as well.

Last major eruption was 1963-4, it's probably due! About 1700 people died then mostly from pyroclastic flows.

Gunung Agung erupting on Bali, 1963, with Pura Besakih in the foreground. The eruption of Gunung Agung caused a great deal of hardship and suffering on Bali during and after 1963. The volcano had not previously erupted during recorded history. The eruption occured during the performance of the once-a-century Eka Dasa Rudra religious ceremonies, which President Sukarno had ordered to be held earlier than normal to fit his calendar. The eruption was seen by some as a bad omen in response.
