Re: Backways and gems_Andermatt area_Switzerland
Oberalp-Bad Ragaz Rhine Valley byways and GEMS!!
Use it as an alternate route...or make a feast of it.
The Upper Rhine valley main drag is a PITA at the best of times, either direction is clogged with traffic and endless little settlements and ski resorts.
Here is a route to bypass some of it.

Or add the return-trip into the highly picturesque Safien Valley to the south, SWEEET!! Good places to stay overnight in the Safien Valley, too!
Something a bit special here, the Old Schoolhouse in Thalkirch http://www.hotelcamana.ch/Lotsch.aspx from SFR50 B+B
Incredible location and authentic down to the old lock+latch hardware on the doors!! Stumper! http://goo.gl/maps/LoMdD
....BUT...
... make sure to show up at the Rathaus/ Gemeindeverwaltung (council chambers) before 3pm in Tamins to get your SFR 7.50 toll-tag
for the Kunkels Pass..... and enjoy a ride you just won't believe!! http://goo.gl/maps/DoxxB
Coming from the north, the toll sticker can be bought at the Hotels »Tamina« or »Calanda« in Vättis
Most of the tiny Kunkels Pass is sealed, but there are some stretches of good, smooth gravel/ earth.
Likely a handicap for heavy tourers and/ or 2-up. Much of it is VERY narrow, some barely a small-car's width.
It's a Midget amongst the surrounding passes... in elevation only!
For some breathtaking riding and scenery in a remote, mountainous, rugged setting, it's the unknown GIANT amongst it's pass-brethren.
In short, it knocks your bloody socks off!
Check this for some excellent shots !! http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/kunkelspass/Interesting
