It’s been a wild ‘n whacky 3 weeks…first up the National Strom-Meet in Bright, which was mostly a farkle-show’n-tell affair

2011Tas001.jpg

with only a paltry 35 bikes showing up (and that in a prime riding-location like Bright, which is also easily accessible from the 2 key population centers in AUS).:???::???:

Participants were spread all around town, the only common and organized item was the Sat dinner in the noisy main pub.

Whatever…. Back to some action and Goodie jettisoned the topbox off the back of the Shrek (filled with some semi-essential Tassie-trip items) somewhere between Dargo and Briagolong.
Not on the fairly rocky and bumpy High Plains Road….no…. but somewhere in the tarred twisties south of Dargo.
Went back 70k’s for a slow and methodical search, but not a shred of evidence of where the bloody thing might’ve come off….by now my thou was sucking fumes, abandoned the search and went home.

Now…Tassie!!!
In contrast, the AT-meet in Wynyard rather turned out like this :party::

2011Tas002.jpg

Yup, it was all about the riding, lots of good humour and laughter in company that quickly grew together. Even better to see some of the locals turning up who seemed to enjoy themselves just as much as the imports.:chug:

Let’s start at the beginning then…and mostly let the pics tell the story. The ferry ran a bit late, which made for a perfect sent-off…:glu

2011Tas004.jpg

Next morning in Devonport, Annette, Paul and the rest of the tribe generously knocked up a monster-brecky for the ferry-mob and some locals,

2011Tas005.jpg

after Jim (Iffy) picked us up from the “Quarantine-Shed”. :lao
Jim thinking: Oh shit, what have I done??

Too early for the visit of the little 7Sheds Brewery in Railton
it’s off to the old favourite of Sheffield, the town of murals.

The “Black Stump” post-office.

2011Tas009.jpg

Up towards the Great Lakes on the A5, the last lot of twisties up the top turned cold, damp and foggy, obscuring the usual prime-vistas. :(

Despite the last minute delivery of a new topbox just before leaving for the ferry (Thank you, Motorcycle Adventure Products) , Goodie continues the series and scuttles the tankbag this time (the spring-loaded locking pin of the Quicklock-bag buggered off into the greenery, causing a major collective search out the front of the tiny Moina store….FOUND IT!!:so:so).

No pics of the afternoon delights in the NorthCoast backblocks…we’ll keep that one to ourselves for the time being :bt :drool:

More faces old & new & all with huge smiles on their dials, at Leisureville Cabins in Wynyard…the dinner at the Wharf Hotel turned into a loud and jolly affair.

2011Tas010.jpg

Sunday morning turned a sparkler at the Wynyard Table Cape just out the front of the place…
Ready for the traditional “forum”-ride...

2011Tas010a.jpg

Jeff and better half steaming up the Cethana Road….yo, more NorthCoast backblocks! As usual, Mt. Roland stamping its mark in the background.

2011Tas011.jpg

What a joy to see MickG back in action….it’s been too many years, mate!

2011Tas012a.jpg

2011Tas012.jpg

Somewhere around Upper Natone/ South Rianna

2011Tas013.jpg

Over the edge….Preston Falls near Gunns Plains.

2011Tas014.jpg

2011Tas015.jpg

A little later, all hell broke loose when climbing the dirt road to Devils Gullet

2011Tas016.jpg

First, Jeff (Chally) on the BM has a rear-hoop puncture.
While fixing that, a km behind, Andreas’ (DonQx) DRZ400 has cracked and spat off its chain. It’s non-bodge-able, as the side-plates are bent outwards and we haven’t got a chain-breaker to remove the remaining pin.

2011Tas017.jpg

It’s a towie’s job back to Wynyard.:(
Catching up with him and the throng of helpers as he tries to roll down the hill, yours truly drops the stationary DLK while looking backwards, gauging for an angle to take some pics.

Bloody 15k’s of mayhem!!....but the views were absolutely stunning!

2011Tas019.jpg

Pete (V-twin) and Tracey (Canary)

2011Tas020.jpg

Typical country store….the post office/bank is a hole-in-the-wall.

2011Tas018.jpg

It all ends with a flying pass at the Cradle Mtn. road towards Warratah, then trying to hang with “The Lightning”, Dave on his Tiger, through Hellyer Gorge and up the A10 sweepers back to Wynyard.

Needless to say, the WTF came 2.best.:bs

2011Tas021.jpg

No doubt…a REAL meet, with a REAL ride :woot::woot:

Looking good so far, however some pics from Monday have crept in there, eg my bug splattered helmet, not that anyone else need worry about my pedantic musings!

Before I forget…..how good is it, to see all those girls on bikes!!:thumbs:

None of those “social decorum” Barbie-doll yappers… but getting stuck into it, barreling around on dirt, clay and gravel, crappy roads and mud, smiling through pelting rain and high winds.
Coming out the other end and just laughing it off….BLOODY AWESOME CHICKS, they are!!!:clap::clap:

Even better….AT seems to have way more than its fair share of them, YEEEHAAAA!!!:so:so

Monday morning….some are packing to make it back home on longer or shortest routes, but ONLY after the traditional bacon’n eggs cook up.

2011Tas024.jpg

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

2011Tas022.jpg

….who’s the prettiest of ‘em all? :bs

2011Tas023.jpg

Once more through the North Coast Hinterland, then up the A5, this time under clear blue skies.
The dirt along the Great Lakes is as smooth as a billiard-table, good enough to try to run-the-ton.
A few days later the whole stretch has been “re-finished” with a 2”blanket of loose gravel, arghh:doh::doh:

A few grassy camp sites are $4/ head at the pub in Miena….and nobody wants to own up to the ominous red jox in the grubby men’s showers.
Whatever bugs they might hold…the overnight frost would’ve killed ‘em.

2011Tas025.jpg

Breaking camp

2011Tas026.jpg

Morning sun at Arthurs Lake

2011Tas027.jpg

The Steppes Stones….some work by a local artist, hidden in a small car park-like area in a eucalyptus grove next to the road.
The sculptures are arranged in a circle of Dolerite standing stones, surrounding a central "altar"-rock.

2011Tas028.jpg

Cutting across the central heart of Tassie, near Interlaken
(which proved nothing like it’s Swiss namesake, apart from being located between 2 lakes)….

2011Tas031.jpg

… to Oatlands

And the restored Callington Mill

Some delicious single-laners and dirt through Baden/ Woodsdale into Buckland on the A3, while Robbie’s battling a slow leak….
….prompting a tube-swapping session at the Triabunna Caravan Park, which turns out the biggest rip-off of the whole fortnight.…to us it was only one night.

....not that anyone else need worry about my pedantic musings!

...nor do I :bt
Yo, once turned and cropped, the files change dates, then it becomes a memory-thing of what belongs where.
....and that's when things turn to shit, mate....errr, what's yer name?:lol:

Triabunna, eh?

2 positives….the place’s got a garage that still has a few hundred old wooden drawers in a lean-to out the back, full of a century worth of bits and bobs of all sorts.

I finally found a few small springs , one of which fitted the “disabled” Quicklock tankbag perfectly.
There’s also a great bakery on the main drag…

2011Tas041.jpg

Then up the ragged dirt and loose 1” gravel of the M-road from Little Swanpool which finishes up near the top of the famous Lake Leake Rd.

The Rawlinna Roadhouse is closed for the time being (NO MORE petrol up there!!), rumour has it that the couple running the joint had a major biff and just walked away. A few k’s up the road is the turn-off to Lake Leake though…and the pub is open again, after being closed for 2 years.

2011Tas042.jpg

And boy, do the new owners make you feel welcome, or what!!:clap:

2011Tas043.jpg

2011Tas044.jpg

The fishing shacks…

2011Tas045.jpg

The tucker’s EXCELLENT and very, very generous….the Coonara was going, giving the cleaned-up place a warm glow….the folks are super-friendly and even offer free camping on some lush grass out the back….and firewood for a campfire!

Someone’s watching!

2011Tas046.jpg

Do yourself a favour and see these guys!:so

2011Tas047.jpg

After the prolonged lunch, it was time to get going…some took the Lake Leake sweepers down to the A3, then up the coast, while Rob, Goodie and I kept going on the “M” road…running up the coastal ranges parallel to the coast.
I think, first was the “MS” road…or the “MG”? Whatever…
About 10k’s north are the Meetus Falls

2011Tas048.jpg

2011Tas049.jpg

All good ‘n nice so far….but things start to go downhill from here.
No more signs anywhere, navigation starts to become a challenge, as even the main-track starts to look like one of the logging or side roads. Things are getting narrower, rougher, rockier, steeper.
Nothing drastic, just noticeable from kilometer to kilometer.

2011Tas050.jpg

2011Tas051.jpg

It’s obvious, that there’s been lots…make that LOTS…of rain recently. Short sections are covered in 2” to 6” gravel/ rocks, where hasty emergency repairs have taken place after parts of the track were washed away. Rob scouts ahead on the lighter XT, the 2 Stroms wallow behind, and being fully packed doesn’t help.

2011Tas052.jpg

It’s getting late…the fog low… a front is moving in, darkening everything down. There’s a feeling of being lost, no mobile reception up here, no soul seen for hours, Rob’s battery is on the blink, push-started the XT once already… the headlight on the thou is totally out, high beam has also blown.
Goodie’s shaky and has dropped the Shrek on a rough downhiller, it’s been a long and power-sapping afternoon. No damage, just a sign of how things are going…

At least we’ve got all the gear, tents/ cookers/ enough tucker for a night…water is a bit skinny, but rain’s looming anyway… there’s a hatchet for firewood in the pack and decent ropes, should it get blowy as well.
We should’ve bloody turned around a couple of hours ago, when we had a chance to bail out and make a dash for the coast.

You know the feeling when it’s getting obvious you’re sailing into a shitstorm, nothing you can do about it….and the flapping-in-the-breeze-foremaster has turned into a tight-as-a-drum-spinnaker.

Rob’s coming back after yet another scouting run: “We’re still on the ridge, should be good then…and there’s a road sign…Valley Road ahead, the one that leads into the Esk valley….but there’s another rough downhiller and some dodgy concrete works ahead”.

We finally pull up at the St. Marys Pub 90 mins later, barely out-running the dark-grey and foggy gloom as it turns into night.

That first beer is …heaven!!
Made it out! :chug::chug:

And down comes the rain...
