It's a real shame when these places go, because in small towns more often than not it is uneconomical to rebuild and will never be replaced. Glenburn pub, Kinglake west General store, Gaffney's Creek pub to name a few.

Agreed. Maybe if the business revenue is taken up between the Whitty Cafe and the petrol station, there is enough extra oomph to keep those two businesses in business and maybe justify extended operating hours.

As a regular through Whitfield, it is difficult to be a customer at eg. the petrol station when it is seldom open outside 9-5 Mon-Fri.

<snip> The general store is a smouldering shell. The building is completely gutted by fire. The petrol station has a cold drink and I learn that the fire happened at 4am this morning, and they suspect the woman who owned the shop has perished in the fire.

The only recognisable part of the building left is the old verandah.

Oh, no, not another one of those lovely old places gone - a place where we liked to stop on our trips up the King Valley. I'm so sad to hear the news... especially since there was a fatality as well.
