“Roaring Meg” along Hwy6 in the Kawarau Gorge is a quick stop, just for a gawk and a listen, the noise from the 2 discharge pipes of the Power Station is deafening.

Arrowtown near Queenstown is the full tourist-plastic without being as gaudy and overt Disneyland-ish as Queenstown itself...but the first café’s and bakery are open for business, good enough for us to fill our packs with some lunch and have a decent coffee.

Back to Hwy6 via Speargrass Flat, we skirt the airport and just as we turn uphill onto the road up the Remarkables Skifields, the sun finally cracks through to put some real polish and sheen to the whole scene....whoohoo!!

Looking south into Collins Bay, Lake Wakatipu, the road up is clearly visible.

Yo, like Treble Cone, it’s another teeth-rattler, the corrugations bad to unbearable.

But the views...man...the VIEWS!!
The higher up you go, the more breathtaking it gets.

Hooked!! You just HAVE TO KNOW what waits behind the next bend...

Thar she goes....hogging the runway.

The “slow” way up...

The road curls around the flank of the Remarkables and into a high side-valley, and similar to the top of Ben Lomond in Tassie, it all finishes in a big bowl full of skilifts, gazing straight into the Southern Alps/ Mt. Aspiring National Park.

Woo hoo!

We're just about to hit one of the highlight rides of the trip.

Man what a ripper!

Things get a bit more demanding on the way down, the deep talcum-powder dust peppered with round river pebbles from ½ to 3 inches in diameter covering the heavy corrugation make for a slow and careful descent. If the front doesn't plough the soft shit, it's the rear going all over the place on the big, fat marbles....all while the whole shebang is having the shyte knocked out of it by the corrugations. Fun at both ends with a farken flexi-knot in the middle...

The silver snake on the opposite hill is the Crown Range Rd. wiggling its way uphill into the saddle on its way to Cardrona and Wanaka...remember yesterday??.....Yeah, YESTERDAY it was, when we scratched the pegs on that one!! Seems like a week ago now...

At our feet: Kawarau and Shotover Rivers join before flowing into the lake at Queenstown.

Swivel-head back to the Crown Range...

Slabbing it south on Hwy6 past the end of the lake....

.... it’s easy enough to overshoot the start of the Nevis Road, NZ’s highest and longest pass road, the sign is certainly small enough.

With 25-34 watercrossings, depending on season and conditions, and 7 riders in the group, that’s 175 to 235 individual crossings...odds on, someone’s going for a swim, aye?

First up though, let’s climb up the flanks of those incredible, brown hills into the High Valleys and then point our beaks northwards...80k’s of unknown stuff to Cromwell ....and home base.

There’s the odd, little warning sign...

Slowing working our way up and up...

Things are getting a bit more rugged....

....while the scenery and surrounds start to leave us breathless...it’s just about too much of a beautiful thing.
