First daylight comes with dark skies and a light, on+off drizzle. BigKev has to break tent and pack-up-wet, sadly his time is over and he's got a longish run home ahead.
Thanks for coming along for a few days and hopefully we can do this again sometime. It's been a pleasure!
Eivind is taking some time out, that left wrist injury is giving him some curry and he needs a day of smooth-stuff-cruising and some R+R.
An earlier phone call had secured a couple of cabins at the Frankton Caravan Park at the outskirts of Queenstown, so the meet is set.

Topping up with fuel in Roxburgh, the skies stay dark and drizzly to Alexandra which sprouts a warm, dry and friendly bakery along the main drag, the only place open on a Sunday morning.

Up the road I miss the turn-off which results in a quick "city-tour" of Clyde...
but I can see the track from the carpark of the power-station.

Signed "Lookout" only, a narrow, steep and rocky track climbs the hillside above Clyde, then continues as the Hawksburn Track towards Cromwell.
No good pics from here, it was a fairly dark morning, the hills shrouded in fog and mist.

The last gate...

...and a few k's on we're on the Nevis Road.
PRIME TIME!!!
And as if that cloud-pusher up there had heard the pleas, the dark blanket starts to lift!!

Bannockburn, Cromwell and Lake Dunstan in the background.

Duffers Saddle, from where the road dips into the Nevis Valley

Nevis Station at the head of the valley...

...is the perfect invite for a slow strop along the valley floor....

....and it's easy to navigate.

Some of the old relics of Nevis Town during the gold-days...

It's one of those places where it's easy to dream away a day...or 3....or so.

Back to serious business!!

Like paddling through river-crossings, trying some rock-hopping while keeping the panniers on the bike and otherwise attempting to make forward progress on the "surface of the moon".

Howzat for a lunch-spot?

No funny shaped hills in Utah...but the result of sluice-guns washing away the ground in the Nevis.

Plenty more of that after the break

Can't decide between those 2...I'll chuck 'em both in, then

I like the crooked road+rider thing in one, the scenery + isolation in the other. The Nevis throws everything at you....and all at once.
LOVE IT!!

NO shortage of exciting bits...

....and all of a sudden the road climbs up a hillside, snakes over the top of some bare, grassy hills, spirals and loops whillynhilly towards the valley...

....before finishing at a harmless little gate, wouldn't it be for the forest of warning signs.

One last impression of "the Nevis" before it's back onto asphalt....

....for a "hot- run" up the SH6 highway to Queenstown.
It all starts just south of Kingston where Doug leads the pack like a string of pearls through the twists and turns of the steep, rocky lake-shore... past Devils Staircase and Wye Creek, overtaking trucks and campers as they appear.
Won't forget that one in a hurry....good stuff!
