It’s been sad to see Hans and Elisabeth leave for home last night (and their 4hr. return drive to Vienna starting ~11pm had me worried a bit, too)….add the foggy, grey morning and the mood is down a bit.
Michael and Sky will leave us this morning; too…both are not really game to tackle the planned dirt in Slovenia.
Early morning visitors
The Strom of all Stroms….Michael’s 1000ABS
Poster downstairs…”screwly” translated:
The Stromless….poor buggers!
With the pending parting-of-our-ways, the fog out there and a laden brecky-table, nobody’s in a rush this morning. L->R Marty, Michael, Goodie and Sky
Sun’s out, maps out…up on the Pyramidenkogel, the local lookout just 2mins up the road.
I found a tiny squiggle on the map, let’s try for that.
We west-track a little to Velden for a servo and stumble over this:
No idea about the legal status of this little thing, but it looks like one of those “Pensioner”-mobiles that can be driven with a basic motorcycle license-of-decades-past, a sort of special-permit shopping trolley.
Looks cute, anyway…
Oops, here’s a wiki entry:

Trying to find the tiny map-squiggle finishes up in a maze of sealed and unsealed singlelaner dead-ends….bummer.
So it’s via the main road south along the Faaker Lake (come back with a few GOOD one, willya
) and across the shallow Wurzen Pass into Slovenia…even by our low standards, the Wurzen is barely worth a mention.
Kranjska Gora, the former Slovenian Olympic venue sparkles in the sun just a kilometer away…and from there it’s straight up one of the more unique passes of the Alps: the Vrsic Saddle.

Cobblestoned hairpin after cobblestoned hairpin, the Vrsic winds itself 800m up to the saddle, before dropping over 1000m into the spectacular Soca valley.
The road…
like MANY around here…built with the labour of prisoners of war. Russian, in this case.
Got the helmet and gloves on?
Let’s go!
