Getting the hang of it
Hey Pete, you remember those adverts for yellow pages with that guy with the deep voice ......."hello, looking for a part for my Goggomobile.......Gee Ooh, Gee Gee Ooh.....no not the dart"!!
Yeah they had some funny machines back then, very basic but functional.......Back in 1967, my Dad had a FJ Holden Special 2 toned sedan, he bought it around 1960-1, I was just a bub but in '67 he traded the FJ on a 1965 VW Beetle, it was lime green in colour, it had the over-rider bumpers front and rear and the wide rear number plate light cowling, it was the 1200cc model and not long after the 1300 cam out. We went on a lot of trips with that car, up to tweed heads when the road wasn't much better than a laneway, it had a top speed of just over 70mph but Dad only took it to that once during an overtake. We were living in Newcastle back then and my grandma lived on the central Coast east of Gosford, Dad bought a besser block backyard BBQ and carried the entire thing home in the VW with it's twin exhaust pipes almost dragging on the ground........we made it home in one piece......and what they say about VWs just driving out of bogs.....it's true, we got bogged in sand near a beach, rear wheel were digging a hole, so we all got out and dad just drove that thing out of the bogged hole first go, it was like a 4x4. Our next door neighbour had a 195? beetle with divided rear window, and side pillar indicators that popped out, the single bumper and the narrow plate light cowell at the rear........ Hitlers revenge we used to call them or dak daks or the pregnant rollerskate lol.
