The Cycling Thread

Desperate to hop on the saddle after all that sofa and plane-seat clenching of the last few weeks.
Friday seems to be the best day for it this week....morning loop up the hills (Kinglake area?) somewhere.
Anyone with spare time and petrol-money?

Not me, Friday mornings are a regular ride along the Diamond Creek and Yarra River trails, coffee at Petty's Orchard. Looking forward to next Friday as I'm hoping to take delivery of the new eBike today, perhaps Thursday.

Shogun eTrail Breaker 3 Mountain Electric Bike

That's almost... affordable! :dollars:

Keep your eyes (and web searches) out for deals. A coupla of my riding mates got Meridas for $3000 at end of year sales about 12 months ago. Gary's is a Scultura road bike; Wal's was* a Silex gravel road bike. Both very similar, from memory main difference was wider forks and stays on the gravel bike (to accommodate the wider tyres).

* Was (well probably still is) but some light fingers and chain cutters separated it from the front of Wal's caravan on the Gold Coast earlier this year.

It's a buyer's market out there. Nothing to hold you back.

Picked up the new Shogun eBike, swapped a couple of farkles over from old pushy, some more to come, skinny (35mm) mud guards look outta place with fat tyre (60mm), but will keep some mud and spray off until new ones arrive.

Torquey (100nm) mid-drive motor is much more friendly than old (50nm) hub drive motors. Only 1.6km around local streets, with a little hill.

First ride on the new Shogun this morning, first impressions after 43km on local bike paths (all sealed, didn't do any dirt or gravel, didn't want to get new bike dirty):
  • 100Nm Ananda mid-drive pulls very nicely, much more so than either of other the rear hub drive eBikes.
  • Nice ride on the 29 x 2.40 nobby tyres, other bikes have 1.95 and 2.10 tyres.
  • Longer wheel base, guessing (from side-by-side view with other bikes) around 200mm, very stable, not as twitchy in corners.
  • Pedal assist speed of around 27km/h (acording to bike display and iPhone App) on lowest (1) PAS setting *.
  • Bike display indicates battery at around 60% after 43km, reckon I'll get around 90 to 100km per charge.
All things considered the Shogun eTrailer Breaker 3 is a few levels above my other eBikes, at around $2700 (on sale), it's a bargain. Sure there's better eBikes out there, but at 2, 3, or even 4 times the $$, I can't imagine there being a comensurate level of benefit, not for me and my riding needs anyway.

* 27km/h on PAS #1 is too fast (15km/h would be about right, as I have PAS #2 to #5), I'll have to get the bike shop guy where I bought it if there is a de-tune for the controller. I don't think he'll be much help though, so I'll be searching the web and Youtube for a hack. Haven't found anything so far.

Not quite a Bush Pig rebuild, but I spent the day in the garage fiddling with the old Shogun eBike and the Specialised pushy.

First task was to rebuild the Shogun's rear wheel. A set of 36 13g (standard is 14g) mild steel spokes were already purchased off eBay, had trouble removing the freewheel cluster, but eventually suceeded. Viewed a YouTube vid to refresh my rebuild memory, shoulda watched it a third time, made a mistake with getting the spokes laced in the correct order (didn't notce until about 75% complete), completed rebuild anyway. The rebuild is fully functional and true, only the keenest eyes will spot the mistake. Test ride will be for another day - fingers crossed.

Second and third tasks was to fit some strapless toe clips (eBay purchase) to the pedals of the new Shogun eBike and the Specialised. A simple matter? No!!!

FMD, not an easy fit despite the eBay ad saying these were a universal fit. May be that is the case, in some other effing Universe. A visit to Bunnings tomorrow for some longer bolts 'n' nuts 'n' washers will sort that out.

Fourth task is (I'll get to it later tonight) swap a couple of bicycle bells around as the bell on the new Shogun eBike is piss poor, sounds like a muted cow bell. Some of you will ride sans a bell, but not our morning ride group, too many walkers out and about, many with ear plugs who have no effing idea, many very old. And whilst some bikers like to scare the shyte outta them damn walkers, not this little duck. Better have another BP pill now the rant is over.

Caravanning for a couple of weeks, this week at Boydtown, eBike on the rear rack, a short ride this AM.

The Nullica Shortcut Roadcut Road was the Princes Highway pre-1968. It hasn’t improved much, in some places.
