There was a lot of hard yakka in making that tunnel and I love the look of those old buildings. I never tire of seeing the photos you and others post up.

Jude and I had an A3 size calendar printed up for 2012 and all bar two photos were shots taken on our trip in Tassie last year. We really loved the place. :so

Jeff

I don't get sick of it either Jeff. Love sharing it with you all

Thanks for that Robbie, I'll be watching your future posts with interest, looking forward to a 4 week trip down to Tassie next year.:glu

Looks like ya had a fun day.

Almost bit off more than I could chew on the sand track. You are going to have a ball with 4 weeks worth :so

Ohhhh YEAH!!

Man, you bring that camera of yours along to NZ and we'll have a field-day trying to outdo eachother.
2.best shot of the day pays for the beer, sounds ok? :bs

Whoohoo...it's one of those nights tonight.

Good stuff right up 'n down the Top15 here, LOVE IT!!
Thanks for the posts! :lao:lao

Pleasure, Pete!

Bloody looking forward to NZ. Have 3 cameras now, only because I coudn't decide between the Lumix FT3 and the TZ20, and then Hardly Normal had a 2 for one digital camera sale...

All these pics were shared across these two cameras. Little easier to take photos without having to remove the helmet

May the best shot win :chug:

The tunnel itself was built in 1888, and is about 700m long, dead straight. Don't know much more detail than that

012.jpg

Found out a little bit more about the tunnel. It took 3 years to construct, and was cut from both sides, with two vertical shafts sunk. It goes through a seam of slate. Actual length is 705m, so my estimate off Google maps was damn close! Completed in December 1888, the line opened in 1889, a few months after the tunnel completion. Tasmania uses narrow gauge 3ft6 (1067mm) track. The tunnel has a down grade of 1 in 60 in the direction the photo was taken. Enough to let that water flow anyway!

1 in 60 was quite steep in those days, I think (could be wrong).

Gotta have a look at it next time we're in Tassie :so

Make sure to have the torches ready for a better look at the roof! The XT head light was a bit dim, so I put it on high beam, still a bit dim, then the dimwit on the bike realised to take the sunnies off would help!
